The on-site sewage treatment system at the above address has been inspected and appears to fall into the categories checked below.
SYSTEM CONFORMITY (1-3). 1
1 "CODE SYSTEM" An ISTS which meets all the location, design and construction standards of the current Orono Municipal Code.
2 "COMPLIANT SYSTEM" An ISTS which does not meet all the location, design and construction standards of the current Orono Municipal
Code but does meet the three foot separation requirement or two foot requirement for systems installed 1996 or earlier, and which is not failing or
an imminent threat to public health or safety.
3 "NON-COMPLIANT SYSTEM" A prohibited ISTS;an ISTS located within a designated 100-year flood plain,any ISTS which may
or may not meet all the location, design,or construction standards of the current Orono Municipal Code and which is failing for any reason; and
any ISTS with less than three feet of unsaturated soil or sand between the distribution device and the limiting soil characteristics.
TANK CONDITION(5-7): r
Tank inspection indicates:
Pumpout not needed at this time.
6 Septic tanks must be pumped out this year (city code recommends tanks to be pumped out once every 3 years.
Tank was last pumped 7-i _0 1 ).
Make sure septic tanks are pumped through manhole and not through white inspection pipes. This allows for the
proper cleaning. Keep water softner and iron filter discharge out of septic system to prolong life of drainfield.
7 Inspection risers missing-tanks could not be inspected. Inspection risers(4"dia. pipe)must be installed in each tank. If
tanks have not been pumped out within the last three years, they should be pumped out now.
DRAINFIELD CONDITION(8-10):
0 Drainfield is dry,no surfacing evident.
9 Some evidence of surfacing, not critical yet.
10 Drainfield is saturated and visibly discharging untreated effluent to the surface. Contact the City Inspector
immediately.Repairs must be completed within 90 days.

SEPTIC SYSTEM INFORMATION SHEET
WHAT IS IN MY BACK YARD AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Most houses built in Orono after 1960 where city sewer is not
available have two septic tanks, one or more distribution boxes and
a number of drainfield trenches . In the septic tanks, heavy sewage
solids will settle to the bottom and be decomposed by anaerobic
(oxygen-free) bacteria action. Floating solids such as grease,
fat, and soap scum will be retained inside the tank by baffles at
the inlet and outlet. This ensures that the effluent entering the
drainfield is relatively free of solids, which tend to clog up clay
soils.
Many houses built after 1975 have mound drainfields . These
systems function on the same principles as trench drainfields
..except that the trench bed is installed above the original ground
to provide a separation from the seasonally high water table and
allow the system to function adequately.

MOUND SYSTEM

HOW CAN I MAKE MY SEPTIC SYSTEM LAST LONGER?
1. Do not use your toilet or kitchen sink as a garbage can.
Undigested foods and cigarette butts will - not decompose in the
septic tanks (this includes the use of garbage disposals! ) .
2 . Havre your tanks pumped at least once every three years (once every
two years is necessary with garbage disposals) . This will probably
cost you $80 - $125 . If you do not specifically ask the pumping
contractor to open up your tanks, he will probably just put the
hose down the inspection riser and drain the liquid from the tanks.
This method will not effectively remove the solids! The tanks
should be opened in order to. stir the contents while pumping to
break up the sludge and scum layers. The bafflelt can also be
cleaned, examined, and repaired (if necessary) at this time.

STEM COMPLIANCE (1-3) : 1
1 Code System: Meets or exceeds current City standards in all respects relating to design,
construction, and location. Appears to be operating properly.
2 Compliant System: Does not meet all current City standards for new construction, but in
most respects appears to be designed, located, and constructed in accordance with previous
codes and is functioning properly.
3 Non-Compliant System: System may or may not meet current City standards for design,
construction, or location, but is failing to properly treat and dispose of the current
input; and any system with less than three feet of vertical separation between the bottom of
the drainfield and the saturated soil level.
(The saturated soil level is 0] or is not [ ] identified under this septic system. If the
saturated soil level is not idem fied, this classification is subject to revision.)
TANK CONDITION (5-9) : 8
5 Pumpout not needed at this time.
6 Solids accumulation in tanks indicates they should be pumped out this year.
System is discharging to the surface. Tanks must be pumped out within 48 hours.
Inspection risers missing-tanks could not be inspected. If tanks have not been pumped out
within three years, they should be pumped out and risers installed now.
9 Inspection pipe is located over tank baffle-can not measure solids accumulation. If tanks
have not been pumped out within three years, they should be pumped out now.
10 One or more tanks are cesspools, which means the septic system is non-compliant.
(The tanks are [X or are not [ ] water tight or the condition is [ ] unknown. If the tanks
are not confirmed to be watertight, this classification is subject to revision.)
INFIELD CONDITION (11-14) : 11

SUBJECT: Septic System Status for Certificate of Occupancy
Due to a wet construction season last year, the septic
system could not be completed in time for the occupation
of the residence. Although the system does not meet all
current codes, it will be considered "conforming" until
the work can be completed. The owner, G. L. Hoffman, has
an agreement with a local contractor who will pump the
septic tanks as necessary until the system is completed
and certified by the City.

SITE EVALUATION REPORT
FOR THE NORDSTROM PROPERTY
541 SPRING HILL ROAD
ORONO, MINNESOTA
5-4-85
On April 20-27, 1985 four lots were tested for both a primary and an
alternate drainfield site under the provisions of Individual Sewage Treatment
Systems Standards (WPC-40). The other lot in the proposed subdivision is
the existing house.
Lot 1 had an average percolation rate of 12.8 minutes per inch on the
primary site(holes 1-4) and a rate of 10. 7 MPI on the alternate site. With
the lack of a high water table, standard trenches are possible on both sites.
Lot 2 had sand soils and yielded an average percolation rate of 7.8
minutes per inch on the primary site(holes 1-4) and a rate of 10.0 MPI on
the alternate site(holes 5-6). Again, with the lack of a high water table
standard trenches would be possible.
Lot 3 is the existing house and Lot 4 had an average percolation rate
of 15.5 minutes per inch for the primary site(holes 1-4), and a rate of
30.0 minutes per inch on the alternate site(holes 5-6).Standard trenches
could be used on both sites also, but the alternate site could have the
trenches no deeper than 2 feet in the natural soil.
Lot 5 had an average percolation rate of 9.6 minutes per inch on the
primary site(holes 1-4) and 7.9 MPI on the alternate site. Because of a
possible high water table these areas were tested shallower for shallow
trench systems in the abundant black loam topsoil. Thus, shallow trenches
would be needed for both sites and interceptor drains would be highly
recommended.
Once a house is proposed, a sp ific system design would be needed.
If any other information is needed 'n the meantime, please contact me.
Sincerely,
