Field Observations :
(1) At the above address in Orono our site soil inspections and evaluations of the foundation soils
began in August developing a design that would be acceptable considering th high water table,
the sand mixed with some silty soils and the need for stabilizing rock near the water surFace. It so
happened that one of the first test pits (excavations) was in one of the weakest soil areas on site.
ased on this wet silty material an elaborate system of rock, fabric and compacted sand as
proposed for the footing system. This concept was set aside when more extensive excavating and
surveying revealed sounder soil at the actual foofing depths and a water table that would be
3' to 4' below the footing.
(2) The key elements of the foundation system selected and installed were:
1. Stabilizing the base with 1 1/2" rock {12"to 24" deep).
2. Covering rock with sand compacted to grade.
3. Three#4 rebar in bottom 3" of concrete footing.
(3) Two final inspections were conducted on October 1, 2003. In the aftemoon we were joined by
Bruce from the Inspections Office in Orono_ On a joint trip around the site, one area about 4' in
footing length and one foot wide was discovered to have no rock on the inside half of the footing
forms. On the inside some organic clays and silty soils were uncovered by stabilizing rock_ These
areas wili be conditioned to the status of the other 98% of the project before proceeding.
(3) This excavation and foundafion soils system is quite suitable for construction of the
proposed structure. If further information is requested or if you have any questions,
please call at your convenience.

Field Observations :
(1) At the above address in Orono we did a follow up site soil inspection inside the perimeter of the
footings to evalua#e the expected strength vf the soils under the floor slab when the project is
cmpleted. With all interior load bearing walls and columns removed from the design before
cons#ruction began, the perimeter footings are carrying most of the struetures load. The interior
walls, furnishings and appliances average less than 100 pounds per square foot. The 4" concrete
slab will weigh 50 pounds per square foot and the two automobiles will produce eight spot loads of
1000 pounds per square foot. The maximum bearing pressure at the building pad will be 1150
pounds per square foot. This will dissipate to approximately 165 pounds per at the 6 foot depth
of the silty clayey soils_ At other sites along North Shore Drive our drill rig has encountered
bearing pressures of 1300 pounds per square foot in the silty clayey soils at and below the
water level. This is eight times greater than the cafculated bearing pressure at the subject
site, which gives a large factor of safety and a great comfort zone for proceeding.
(2) A Dynamic Cone Pentvmeter (DCP)*was applied to the interior soils on site. Explained in more
detail below this device is very effective in determining the 'in place' strength of soils_ The sands
to a depth of 4 feet were abserved to be sofid fill materials and the test results bear this out (3500
pounds per square foot). We were no#able to get to get deeper to the clayey silts at 6 feet as the
soils were too tight and cold to allow penetration of the measuring device.

" 7he DCP Is an objective test to confrm soil stength. A cone at the end of a metat rod is driven into the soil by
a 17.2 pound weight falling 0.5 metes, The resultant millimers per blow can be convrted to the
cemmonly used pounds per square foot.
