RE: Stairway - Building Code Violation

Dear Mr. Fisk:
You have had conversations with Bruce Vang, Orono Building Inspector, regarding the stairway
at the above referenced property. This letter is to require you to rebuild the stairs to code
before September 5, 1994. �tatistics show stairways to be very hazardous. About 800,000
accidents annually are attributed to stairway use in the United States. Approximately 4,000 are
fatal. Therefore, it is imperative that stairways be constructed to code at the very least.
Accidents will still occur on stairs, but if they are built to code, there won't be lawsuits naming
you, the City and the property owners as liable parties. It is unfortunate that the homeowner
may lose some closet space and that you will have to go through the work of rebuilding, but if
it saves one person from injury or death, it is well worth it.
The City will initiate legal action if the above deadline is not met. If you have any questions

Re: Stairway - Building Code Violation, 3458 North Shore Drive
Dear Mr. Fisk:
Your failure to correct the hazardous condition of the stairway at the above referenced property
leaves the City no alternative but to issue the enclosed citation. The citation will require a court
appearance and payment of a fine.
A new deadline of May 1, 1995 has been established for compliance. If this deadline is not met,
the City will file a formal complaint and report the matter to the State Commerce Department
for possible revocation of your contractor's license. If you have any questions, feel free to
contact me at my office. If you disagree with the City's interpretation of the code you can
confer with the Minnesota State Building Code Division at 296-4639.

with an 8" tread width. Code requires a 9" tread width. An 8" tread width makes the stairs too
