Dear NTr. & 1VYrs. Stein:
The purpose of this letter is to provide structural engineering for a portion of the
. remodeling in progress at your residence.
BACKGROUND
The owner is remodeling his residences and wishes to remove the east gable end
wall of the house.
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
1. A site visit was conducted by John H. Dahlmeier of J. H. Dahlmeier
Engineering Inc. on March 14, 2000 to review existing conditions.
2. Rather than remove the existing 2x lintel beam and disrupt the existing
continuity, a repair option is suggested.

3. The repair option for this beam is:
a. Install 1/2" CDX plywood over entire exterior surface of east wall from bottom
of lintel to top plate (in area approximately 19 feet Iong .and 60" high at the
Pe�)•
b. Prior to instaliation of plywood, remove all siding and insulation board.
c. Repair any damaged studs.
d. If top plate is not 3" wide, install blocking snug between studs to provide 3"
blocking at roof line.
e. Glue 1/2" plywood to all studs, bottom beam and top plates.
f. Nail plywood to bottom beam (lintel) with four rows of power nails (.131
diameter)C�3 6" O.C.
g. Nail plywood to top plate or studs with eight power nails every 16".
h. Provide.power nailing to studa in remainder of field� 6" O_C. _
PROFESSIONAL OPINION
4. It is my professional engineering opinion that this modification will provide a
suitable lintel beam support for the east wall of the residence and meet the
requirements of the Code.
GENERAL
5. The observationa and opinions expressed in this report were based on my
professional engineering judgment and professional practice as well as the visual
inspection.
