Dear Mr. Hasnain:
Last year your contractor Ross Langhans called and inquired about replacing an existing fence in
your front yard. I explained to him that when a fznce is removed the City requires a replacement
to meet current code. We discussed code requirements including the fence height. Orono
municipal code allows a 6' high fence at the street propem- line on lakeshore lots that abuts a
County Road. When I spoke to Ross I was under the assumption that your lot w-as lakeshore like
every other property on that stretch of road.
It has recently come to my attention that yours is not a lakeshore lot. Therefore your fence is too
high and the City must require you to lower it to -�2" from arade. I apologize for the inaccurate
information provided to your contractor. Please bring the fence into compliance �vithin the next
two weeks.

Dear Mr. Oman:
We are writing to you with reference to your letter to us dated June 28, 2001 in which you
ask that we reduce the height of the fence in front of 3070 North Shore Drive, Orono, MN
55391. We have done substantial landscaping around the fence. It is well-made and was
professionally installed, with the prior approval of the City of Orono offices. We feel that
we have proceeded correctly in seeking prior approval before actually building the fence.
In discussing the matter with our lawyer, may we suggest a workable compromise since
we should not be penalized for an error we did not make. The compromise is for us to
seek a retroactive variance for non-compliance in fence height that you note in your fetter.
Since the problem was not of our making, we respectfully ask that its solution should
come from the City of Orono, not us.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff,
This letter is a follow up to a conversation I had with Mary Woodruff earlier this year.
The fence on the road side of your property was constructed to high and must be reduced
to 42" above grade (see attached correspondence with previous home owner).
Unfortunately the previous owner left this problem for you to deal with. Please bring the
fence into compliance within the next month. Thank you in advance for your

On June 28, 2001 this office notified you of a zoning problem with your fence. As of this
date the fence is still in violation. A new deadline of September 17, 2001 has been
established. If this deadline is not met The City will initiate legal action.
