R: Minnetonk :enter for the Arts. In your Fax on Ma.y 11 2001 regarding roof drains you brought up a few questions. They addressed the following: 1. Section1506.1 of the UBC regarding roof slope. The building has varying roof slopes of 1/4" pr foot over the office area, 3/16" per foot over the Sculpture and Ceramics area, a;d 1/8" per foot over the north classrooms. Section 1506.1 of the UBC allows fcr shallower pitched raofs than 1/4" per foot when they are designed for watir ponding in accordance with Section 1611 of the UBC. Our project engineer i: currently on vacation, but I will forward you that information when he returns i.ext week. 2. Sizes of the rcf scuppes. Included is a copy of the Minnesota Plumbing Code with the siz of vertical leaders. Using the table in Section 4715.2710 subpart 5 Size of Vertical Leaders, we are able to calculate the areas for our leaders as follow:: The roof oer the offices is 4240 sqtt. and has one leader. This leader serves the whole240sqft. Using the table we are able to calculate its size to be 4 inches. The roof od•er the Exhibition room is 2849 sqft. and has three leaders. Each leader serv:s 950sqft (2849 = 3 = 950) of roof. The table calculates their sizes to be 2 1/2"'.inches. We will be using 4 inch leaders. S- 6 = o r o;. . i 05/15/01 TUE 05:49 FA% 002 The roof ower the Painting Drawing room is 1082sqft, and has two leaders. Each leader serv: 546sqft (1092 =2 =546) of roof. The table calculates their sizes to be 2 inch:;s. We will be using 4 inch leaders. The roof ov►er the classrovms is 14,053sqft. and has 6 leaders. Each leader serves 232sqft (14,053 :6 = 2342) of roof. The table calculates their sizes to be 4 inchas. We will be using 4 inch leaders. The maximum recjuired drain size from above is 4 inches, we will be using 4 inch drain for alf the leders for uniformity. In Section 1506 0the UBC Handbook you included, there is the description of combined overftov and drain in one scupper. This seems to be our condition. If so, the scupper size should be four times the drain size. - one time for the drain itself and three tiri,es for the required overflow with a minimum height of 4 inches. The scupper sizerould be 4 inches high by i 6 inches wide. We will use this size for all of our cuppers. I will contact you fter you have time to review this information to see if there are any additional iterns you would like to discuss, or if there are any of these issues we need to examie some more. CODE REVIEW SECOND FLODR PLAN EXITINCi .,...,y_,.e G-OOZ J new building as a portion of the existing building during construction. I believe this is allowed in the Building code in Section 503.3. To recap the other issues we discussed during the meeting on the Sth Oct. 2000. The Art Center will be a mixed use occupancy. It will include a Group E occupancy for the classroom areas, Group A.3 for the exhibit and dining areas, and Group B for the 2nd floor office area. There will be a Hallway running from the front entry North to the Classroom area, then running East West to connect the Classroom areas. This can be a Hallway, not a corridor, because all of the classrooms exit directly onto grade ;and the entire building will have an automatic sprinkler system. The areas which will need one hour separations will be: around the Mechanical rooms, the elevator shaft, and the exit corridor on the north side of the Dining room. (In addition to the Sculpture Room covered above). The mechanical system is a heat pump system. The chiller will be in the cooling tower and the make up air handlers will sit on the roof where they are required. The air handling units will be in the spaces where they are required. The building will be clad with galvanized wall panels, exterior steel panels, and an exterior wood composite paneling. The roof will predominantly be a flat roof with a 1/4" per foot slope. The roof will drain through scuppers and downspouts. The other areas of the roof will be a galvanized standing seam roof. Lyle will review the drawings further, and review them with the Fire Marshal. We will schedule another meeting to review further developments, and as the design of the building progresses. This information represents our understanding of the discussion that took place at the referenced meeting. Please contact me with additions or changes within 10 days of receipt of these minutes.
