CITY OF ORONO—AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER/GENERAL PERMIT
(All pennits must be approved by the G'irc Rtarshall and/or Building Official)
1. Permits are required for all fire sprinkler installation and repair. All work shall be done by a licensed
fire sprinkler contractor. Two sets of plans, specification data sheets, fire flow tests and hydraulic
calculation sheets shall be subinitted to the Orono Fire Marshal a miniinum of 7 days before start of
worlc.
2. Pennits can be applied for by mail at PO box 66, Orono,MN, 55323 or in person at,
2750 Kelly Parkway ;phone: (952)249-4600. Pennits are also available online at:
www.ci.orono.mn.us
3. All systeins shall be designed,installed and maintained to N.F.P.A.-13,N.F.P.A.-25,Minnesota State
Building Code,Minnesota State Fire Code and Standards. All attic systems are to be spaced at a
inaxiinum 130 square foot coverage. Plastic pipe will not be allowed at any time in attic spaces.
4. All equipment installed shall be U.L. or F.M. approved for fire protection service. Water flow test
shall be completed on all new systeins. Water flow test reports shall be submitted to the Orono Fire
Marshal along with plan subinittal.
5. Yard or wall post indicator valves are required. All indicating and control values installed shall be
provided with tainper protection. On dry systems, tl�e control valve to service the pressure switch(air)
shall be supervised.
6. Inspectars test valve shall be installed on each floar level or zone of system. All systems shall have
main drain and inspectors test valves piped to the outside.
7. No water is to be introduced into the sprinkler system until main has been thoroughly flushed. 200#
air test and flushing shall be witnessed by the City of Orono Water Department.
8. An approved audible/visual device wired to main flow switch shall be installed above F.D.
connection and in areas normally occupied by tenants.
9. EXISTING SYSTEMS: If any changes in the hydraulically most demanding area, change in
occupancy classification or an addition of 20 or more heads,hydraulic calculations and flow test will
be required.
10. The Orono Fire Marshal shall witness all final flow or trip tests. Appointinents can be made by
calling(952)473-0234, 8:00-4:00 p.m.Monday-Friday. 24-hours notice is requested.
11. When required, (30 foot building height) stairwell standpipe's shall have 2 '/z gate valves installed
with 2 '/z x 1 '/z caps.

Your fire sprinkler installation plan for the above mentioned school structure has been
approved with the following changes.
A- Plans shall be submitted as soon as possible for a reliable water supply for the
sprinkler system for this building as per NFPA-13 and NFPA-22. An un-listed plastic
combustible swimming pool does not meet requirements of these codes. A flow test
should be done on the new well on this property to feed either an interior or exterior
listed water tank for a water supply. Pressure tanks would also be acceptable.
