Re: Boat Storage
Dear Mr. Mack,
The city has received complaints about the storage of your boat at 1650 North Farm Road in
Orono. Unfortunately the storage location is in violation of City ordinance#78-1577 (4) d 2. Your
lot has Streets on 3 sides so the location of the boat is considered a front yard where boat
storage is not allowed.
' Therefore the city must require you to move the boat to a conforming location or off site. A dead
line of October 19, 2009 has been established for relocation. If you have any questions, or if you
have a problem meeting this deadline please feel free to contact me at my office.
Sincerely,
J

Subject: Boat Storage
Hello
Thank you for your email.
Boat storage is permitted on Residential property in conformance with City Code Section 78-1577(4). Allowed storage
locations for a lakeshore lot are in a side yard and rear yard;trailerable boats may be stored on trailers in a driveway in a
front yard or side street yard [Cite: 78-1577(4)(d)(1)].
The City's required yard definitions are listed within City Code Section 78-1:
Lot line means the property line bounding a lot; except that where any portion of a lot extends into the
public right-of-way or a proposed public right-of-way, the line of such public right-of-way shall be the lot line.
Lot line, front, means that boundary of a lot which abuts an existing or dedicated public or private street,
and in the case of a corner lot it shall be the shortest dimension on a public or private street. If the dimensions of
i
a corner lot are equal, the front lot line shall be designated by the owner and filed in the office of the building
inspector.
Lot line, rear, means that boundary of a lot which is opposite the front lot line. If the rear lot line is less
than ten feet in length, or if the lot forms a point at the rear, the rear lot line shall be a line ten feet in length
within the lot, parallel to and at the maximum distance from the front lot line. On a lakeshore lot, the rear lot
line is the lot line that is opposite the natural ordinary high water mark at the lakeshore.
Lot line, side, means any boundary of a lot which is not a front lot line or a rear lot line.
Lot, lot of record, means any lot for which a deed or registered land survey has been recorded in the
office of the Register of Deeds or the Registrar of Titles for Hennepin County prior to January 1, 1975, and after
approval by the council if required.
Lot, through, means a lot which has a pair of opposite lot lines abutting two substantially parallel streets,
and which is not a corner lot. On a through lot, both street lines shall be front lot lines for applying this chapter.
Please contact me if you have any further questions. The City appreciates your cooperation in this matter.
Thank you,
Melanie

Subject: Boat Storage for Robert Mack, 1650 N. Farm Rd.
I am writing this letter on behalf of my father, Bob Mack. As per our conversation last week regarding the boat
storage, I tried to look up the ordinance as to what consistutes a front yard and was unable to find it. In our
conversation, you told me any road bordering the property is considered the front yard. There are three roads
bordering the property which would make three front yards, and according to that makes boat storage
unavailable on this property.
Please forward me a copy of the ordinance and the date in came into effect. We would like you to explain what
constitutes a front yard and see a definition.
Thanks for your assistance.

RE; Boat Storage
Dear Melanie,
My property is nonlakeshore and my boat is a trailerable boat on a trailer. Upon my
review of the city ordinance#78-1577 (4)
Nonlakeshore lots. Boats maybe stored in a side yard and rear yard; trailerable boats may
be stored on trailers in a driveway in a front yard or side street yard.
According to this the storage of my boat on my property meets the city requirements.
Sincerely,
