Dear Ms. Fox:
An inspection of your septic system was conducted on August 2, 2000. A summary of the inspection
is below.
Septic Tank Condition
1. Pumpout not needed at this time.
The septic system is non-compliant due to a lack of a three foot separation distance between the bottom
of the drainfield to the seasonally high watertable. The three foot requirement is a State Code, not a Ciiy
Code. A soil boring was conducted to deternune the depth of the seasonally watertable. The residence
must be connected to the municipal sewer system no later than December 31,2010.
Enclosed is a list of state licensed septic contractors who work in Orono on a regulaz basis. Also
enclosed is a fact sheet explaining how a septic system functions properly. Finally, an as-built drawing
is enclosed that shows the approximate location of the septic system.
If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact me at the City Offices at 249-4600.

Dear Mr. &Mrs. McMillan:
The above described property is in a Metropolitan Urban Service Area(MUSA) for sanitary sewer
installation. The factors for initiating the sewer project were smaller lot sizes and non-compliant septic
systems with limited replacement sites available. The residence was required to connect to the sewer
system no later than February 14, 2000. Recently, the City Council adopted a resolution allowing all
scwcr conncctions to coincide with the septic system upgradc time frame. The time frame for a scptic
system upgrade is seven to ten years from the inspection date dependant upon the property's location.
Your property will need to connect to the sanitary sewer system no later than December 31, 2008,which
is the date your septic system was to be upgraded. A Sewer Availability Charge (SAC)fee will need to
be paid to the City in the year the sewer connection is made. A licensed plumber must then obtain a
permit from the City to make the connection from the residence to the actual sewer line.
If at any time before December 31, 2008 the residence undergo's a remodeling project that will increase
tlie total water use,the residence must then connect to the sanitary sewer system. If at any time before
the above date the system is failing, the residence must then immediately connect to the sanitary sewer
system.
Minor maintenance can and should still be conducted on your septic system. Pumping the septic tanks,
repairing or replacing pumps, and replacement of septic tank bafles are examples of acceptable repairs.
If the septic system needs major maintenance, such as septic tank replacement or drainfield replacement,
connection to the sanitary sewer system will be required.
If there aze any questions regarding this letter, please contact me at(612) 249-4600.
