Dear Patrick:
I visited the single family residence at 135 Luce Line Ridge Road, Maple Plain, MN on April 8, 2016 to
observe the structure, as you requested.
Our scope of work includes the one site visit that was conducted and the preparation of this report and
plan,which contains our observations and recommendations. It is our understanding that we are involved
in this project to evaluate and to provide design details for the cantilevered gable with brick veneer at the
south gable of the'garage.
Descri�tion of Structure
The building is a brick veneered wood-framed structure with a basement. The building was built in 1987
and is typical of the construction of that period. A fire within the last year destroyed the garage and a
portion of certain elements of the main house structure.
06servations
The structure is largely rebuilt since the fire. Garage walls and the roof have been reframed at the most
burnt portions utilizing the existing footings and foundations.The garage roof has been construded
using pre-fabricated roof trusses provided by Wisconsin Truss Inc. Shop drawings were available on site.
The proposed cantilevered brick gable is not yet installed, however,the main supporting elements,the
steel angle, bent brackets, and beam have been instalfed.
Opinions and Recommendations
The additional loading at three interior trusses, resulting from the cantilever beam's backspan,was
calculated.The loads were provided to the original truss manufacturer for the purpose of re-evaluating
them based on the new loading.The evaluation determined that the existing trusses have enough
capacity for bearing the additional loads. Refer to Appendix 1 for the updated calculations provided by
the truss manufacturer,Wisconsin Truss,Inc.
The existing 6x6 beams, steel angle, steel angle bracket and trusses can remain. However, parts of the
assembly need to be supplement and/or modified.Refer to attached sheets Sl-S4 and the structural
notes that follow for a complete description and methodology of recommended repairs.
When recommended repairs are undertaken per the foliowing structuraf notes and attached sheet5 Sl-S4,
dated 4/18/2016,the installation related to our scope of work will perform adequatety.
Please see the attached structural notes for material strengths and general construction notes.
We recommend that the modifications be reviewed by a competent third party inspector or by a licensed
Engineer prior to the installation of the brick enclosure.

visual observations, building codes,and calculations performed based on this information. No attempt

DIMENSIONAL LUMBER
Design assumes lumber is free of significant splits and checks,and contractor will visually inspect during
installation.
Sills and all other lumber in contact with concrete or masonry and within 8"of finished grade shall be
preservative treated wood. In crawlspaces or unexcavated areas within the building foundation,wood
shall be preservative treated for joists within 18"of exposed ground and/or girders within 12"of exposed
grDund.
Preservative treated wood shall be in accordance with the American Wood Protection Association,
Standard U1.
All lumber is to be grade stamped,which is to contain grading agency, mill number or name,grade of
lumber,species or species grouping or combination designation, ru�es under which graded,where
applicable,and condition of seasoning at time of manufacture.
All lumber shall be seasoned to a moisture content of 19%or less,with the indication of"S-Dry"on the
grade s�amp.
All lumber shall be protected from the elements.
Minimum nailing shall be in accordance with Table R6023(1)of the 2006 IRC unless noted otherwise.
All walls shall have a single bottom plate and double top plate.

supports. Leave an 1/8"gap at all end and edge joints to allow for expansion. Stagger end joints of
panels. Refer to plan and notes for any special shear wall nailing and bolting conditions. Gypsum
sheathing to be a minimum of 1/3"thick fastened with 6d cooier or wailboard nails at 7"on center to all
framing members unless noted otherwise.
