HomeMy WebLinkAboutseptic info ; , , • 1 • a. To: Orono residents on mound type septic systems From: Willie Gibbs, ISTS Manager Date: May 10,2006 Re: Landscaping Do's and Don'ts for Mound Systems, Quick Reminder Do plant and maintain a full cover of grass and keep mowed to a normal height, this grass cover aids in the evaporation of large amounts of effluent(the fiquid left after the"other" stuff has been removed) in the summer time and allows the mound system to help breakdown nitrogen in the effluent, Do water the grass over the mound in extreme dry conditions, sparingly. Do avoid unnecessary foot traffic over the mound, mow it and stay oif of it. This is especially true in the winter time. Even human foot traffic can cause frost to penstrate the mound resulting in potential freezing problems. Do inspect your mound system annually for winter kill, (reseed if necessary) animal damage, (burrowing)or signs of potential failure. Do not plant trees or shrubs on the mound system, smaller trees and shrubs may be planted at the edges. Remember, that sunshine is the key to a healthy mound system. Do ask questions, if you have any concerns or questions concerning your mound system please feel free to call me, l can be reached at 952-249-4626. 1 ► ..: .. O_V O O CITY OF ORONO Municipal Offices , Street Address Mailiag Address: j'' 2750 Kelley Parkway P.O. The factors for initiating the sewer project were smaller lot sizes and non- compliant septic systems with limited replacement sites available. The septic system serving your home is a compliant system according to State and City standards. Your property was exempted from connecting to the sanitary sewer system at that time. The existing septic system serving your home may stay in use until the system becomes non- compliant. If for any reason the septic system becomes non-compliant, the home must then connect to the sanitary sewer system If the home undergo's a remodeling project that will increases the total water use, the home must then connect to the sanitary sewer system. Minor maintenance can and should still be conducted on your septic system. Pumping the septic tanks, repairing or replacing pumps, and replacement of septic tank batles are examples of acceptable repairs. If the septic system needs major maintenance, such as septic tank replacement or drainfield replacement, connection to the sanitary sewer system will be required.
