Dear Property Owner(s):
I am writing in regards to your property located at 525 Leaf Street in Orono, tax parcel
number 05117234100. It has come to my attention that a business called Weddings of
Wayzata Inc. is facilitating weddings, dinners, receptions and other activities associated
with weddings. I am concerned that the capacity of the septic system could be exceeded
resulting in a public health situation. The existing septic system was designed for one
church service a week for 150 people, two weddings a week for 150 people each at each
wedding and no receptions, two meetings each week for 25 people and the caretakers
house.
I have reviewed the Weddings of Wayzata's potential for water use with the designer of
the existing system. His name is Steve Schirmers, telephone number 763-497-3566.
This information is based upon the content of W.O.W. website. The potential for water
use is staggering. There is no room for expansion of the existing system nor is there any
potential for an alternative site for a future system according to the Mr. Schirmers. I
would strongly encourage you to do several things before the start of the wedding season.
The installation of a water meter would allow for accurate flow measurements going into
the mound system. I would also recommend a review of the water using appliances in
the church and house. If the toilets are old 6-8 gallons per flush replacing them with very
low flow toilets can save an enormous amount of water. The same can be said for auto
shutoff faucets and such. If you would like to discuss other ideas please feel free to
contact me at 952-249-4626.
Sincerely,

Re: Church Septic System located at 525 I.eaf Street

Dear Jeff,
I did review the letter from the City of Orono regarding your septic system for the church and I
did receive and review the septic system plan you sent me also. Below is my opinion of the
overall design of the septic system.
In summary, the design does appear to have taken into account the major design concern for
churches in that they tend to have high effluent flows intermittently with little or no flow when
there are no church services. This tends to be the same scenario when the facility would be used
for weddings and receptions also.
From my experience and training, the best way to account for and manage high intermittent
flows is with a timer system and a lazge pump chamber. This system does have both. The
essence of this is that the timer prevents the mound from being over dosed at any one time and
the excess effluent is held in the pump chamber and pump out gradually over time. You will
know if eventually too much effluent is being generated because the alarm in the pump sta.tion
would sound.
The suggestions made by Mr. Gibbs are noteworthy ones to consider and would apply to any
septic system, maybe excluding the water meter for residential systems.
I did check the depth of solids in the first septic tank for the church which was about 4 inches
with only a thin scum layer. It seems the tank was pumped within less than 3 years. Since I was
there with the pump truck,I did pump the first septic tank for the church. A little extra pumping
doesn't hurt.
It is my opinion that this design for the church and the carriage house is adequa.te and deals
effectively with the high intermittent flows that are generated by church establishments.
Feel free to ca11 me at 612 310-7887 if you have any more questios or concerns.
