RE: Boulder Retaining Wall Typical Section
100 Kintyre Lane
Orono, Minnesota
Project No. 15-1774
Dear Mr. Judd,
This letter is being sent to discuss our typical section for the proposed boulder retaining walls at the 100
Kintyre Lane project in Orono, Minnesota. This design is based on site layout information provided by
you on July 9, 2015.
The primary boulder retaining wall will be located along the driveway and around to the back of the
house. The wall will vary in exposed height from about 11 feet to 1 foot. A minimum wall batter/setback of
18° (1 inches/vertical foot) should be used. Slopes as noted below will be present at the top and bottom
of the wall. No groundwater or other surcharge loads have been designed for the wall. If site conditions
vary from what is shown on the Typical Section, please call me to discuss other options.
Refer to industry standard practice references for installation information, specifications, and details.
- Boulders shall be placed to avoid continuous joint planes in vertical directions.
- Each stone shall bear on two or more rocks below it with good flat-to-flat contact.
- Compact any structural fill place behind the drainage zone to 95% standard proctor.
 - Install woven landscape fabric behind the stone to limit soil migration through the wall face.
- Drainage stone shall consist of clean 3/4" to 1.5"crushed stone
The attached typical section should be referenced for the appropriate wall section height. Special note
should be made of the wall embedment depth and the geosynthetic fabric (geogrid) length, if required, as
measured from the front face of the wall. Refer to retaining wall industry standard specs for installation
information and details.
The design of the wall system assumes the following:
- Soil conditions: Sandy SilUClay, friction angle = 32.0 degrees, unit weight of 120.0 Ib/ft3
- Allowable soil bearing capacity = 3,000 psf
- No external surcharge loading behind walls
- Slope at bottom of wall = 10:1; Slope at top = 10:1

Direct concentrated surface drainage away from the walls. The walt design was performed using the
design guidelines presented in the third edition of the"Design Manual for Segmental Retaining Walls"
(DMSRW) published by NCMA in 2009. If soil conditions, proposed wall layouts, or other design
parameters vary from that assumed, a revised analysis may be needed. Please call me if you have any
questions or need more information. Thank you.

Melanie,
Couple comments.
1. The wall design calls for 3000 psf required bearing capacity. Need confirmation from builders engineer that the
site's can meet this.
2. The design calls for the wall design engineer to conduct a site visit prior to block placement. The results of that
visit/inspection should be provided as part of the as built submission.

Mike,
Our engineer has reviewed the plans submitted and has a couple of comments:
1. The wall design calls for 3000 psf required bearing capacity. Need confirmation from builders engineer that the
site's can meet this.
2. The design calls for the wall design engineer to conduct a site visit prior to block placement. The copy of the
results of that visit/inspection should be provided to the City.
Please have your engineer address his comments.
