Subject: RE: Train DepoUPlayhouse at 525 Hunter Pass
Hi Christine.
The model railroad track installation was indeed halted back in 2007 when a city inspector stopped at the house. At that
time I never dreamed that a building permit would be needed to put a model train track on the lawn. The path that was
going to be used for an expanded track is today nothing but a walking path that I occasionally mow—mostly so the
Metropolitan Mosquito Control folks can get to the creek back there.A small circle of track still exists that is simply laid
on the ground next to my driveway. It is by no means a permanent installation; in fact, I'd be pleased to disassemble it at
any time. It is no longer used but kind of looks nice in the landscape. Please let me know.
I do not wish to get into a building permit situation for the train depot and withdraw my request. Thanks for your kind
assistance.
Best regards,
Mark

Mark,

The structure you are proposing for your property requires a building permit. Attached is our building permit
application. We will need the proposed concrete slab, the proposed structure and all proposed improvements
shown on an updated survey.
Also, a stop work order was issued on 11/20/2007 for a railroad track. In 2008 the city planner noted the track
was not constructed, yet when comparing a 2012 Hennepin County aerial photo with the Hennepin County
aerial photo printed in 2007 it now appears a path or track of some kind has been constructed. If so, this work
was not permitted by the City and after-the-fact approvals may be necessary. Please make sure that all
improvements (existing and proposed) are reflected on the updated survey submitted—including the existing
and future septic system treatment areas.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions.

Subject: Train Depot/Playhouse
Hi Chris. I just left you a VM with more detail. Attached is a sketch of the train depot/playhouse that I'd like to
put on a concrete slab in my backyard at 525 Hunter Pass in Orono. I have a hobby company based in
Plymouth, MN that makes small riding trains. This building was used a few years ago at the MN State Fair at an
exhibit there. It's very well built—in fact, it originally cost $26,000 to construct.
The depot has the same roof pitch as my house and identical cedar shake shingles. I think it would look really
nice in the backyard. We'd be using it as a playhouse and storage for my grandchildren's trikes, pool toys, etc.
The signs indicated on the plan on the roof and the sides would not be used—well, except for the one on the end
which now says "SAINT PAUL." I'd for sure change it to say "ORONO" ar maybe "WAYZATA." ;-)
I hope that this is OK with the city. Just let me know if any kind of a permit is required.
Thanks in advance.
