OWNER: Mary Stevenson GENERAL CONTRACTOR: SEPTIC CONTRACTOR: SITE EVALUATOR: S-P Testin REPORT DATE: February 13, 1998 The City of Orono has Approved your on-site system design as of February 24, 1998 (approved-disapproved) (date) wi[l1 the following conunents: A staff variance is granted for the drainfield location on slopes greater than 6 (the slope is 7) as this site is the best available on the lot. A variance is also granted for the drainfield setback 10 feet from the property line where 20 feet is required. THIS IS NOT A PERMIT. Ttiis is a design approval form which must accompany the site plan. A permit must be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation. A list of currently licensed septic contractors is enclosed. NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans and specs must have prior approval of the Inspector (473-7357). Call for inspections 24 hours in advance. ALL DRAINFIELD AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to building site excavation and fencing must remain in place until final site grading. Approval to pour footings will not be granted until the Iiispections Department has verified that primary and alternate sites are adequately protected. NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND (cars, trucks, earth moving equipment, etc.) is allowed within 20' of tested drainfield sites either before or after system construction. Compaction of these areas could render them unusable prohibiting the timely comple[ion and or limiting the long term use of the property. A site copy will be available at the City Offices for the septic contractor. CITY OF ON _. . By Stephen eckman, On-site Systems Manager TELEI'I IONE—473-7357• FAX-473-0510 ! -P TES T/NG INC. Steven B. Schirmers • MPCA Cert.No. 627 . 951 Katydid Lane NE • St. Michael, MN 55376 • (612) 497-3566 FAX (612)-497-5011 State License#394 February 13, 1998 Mary Stevenson 205 Hollander Rd. Orono, Henn. Co., MN A Compliance Inspection was completed for the existing on-site sewage treatment system located on this property. The system consists of 2-1000 gallon holding tanks, 1- 1000 gallon pump chamber and 4-100' long trenches = 1200sq.ft. The system was built in 1987. Soil borings into the system found the top of the rock at 6" to 14" below the ground surface with the bottom of the rock at 24" to 32" below the ground surface. Four soil borings, #4,5,6 & 7 completed in the area of the existing system found mottled soil (highest known saturated layer of soil) at 30", 36" 844" below the ground surface. State and local code requires a 2" separation (not in shoreland district) from the bottom of the system and the saturated soil to be in compliance. The existing system is classified as failed, non-compliance due to not meeting the required separation from the saturated soil. The City of Orono will require the system to be upgraded in 10 years, unless an imminent health hazard occurs which is surFace discharging, badcing into the home or the 1 st tank not being water tight. The tanks must be verified water tight by a licensed pumper or the City Inspector. This on-site sewage treatment system is designed for a Type 1, four bedroom home, in accordance with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Chapter 7080 and local ordinances. The soils on this site are SCS soils mapped - HbC - Hayden loam. The seasonally saturated soils were located at 24" to 34" (mottled soil). Due to the seasonally saturated soils, a Pressurized Mound System will need to be installed to treat septic effluent. The bottom of the treatment area must be located at least 3' above the saturated soils. Approval will be needed for the upslope toe of the mound to be 10' from the north property line due to the limited space available. The absorption area will be 20' from the property line. Also the slope is 7%, the city requires a maximum of 6%. 1 y '' . The soils at a depth of 12" have a perc.otation rate averaging 14.5 mpi. The existing pump must meet the pump curve, head pressure and gallons per minute. The power supply and switches must be located outside the manhole and pumping chamber in a weather proof enGosure. A waming device must be installed with a light and sound device, this is in case of a pump faiture. The manifold and supply line pipe must have back drainage to the pumping chamber. The distribution pipes shall have their ends capped. Be sure the rock and sand fill material are clean. The sod layer below the entire mounded area must be tumed over, just break up the sod, be sure not to over work. All neighboring wells are located greater than 100' away from the proposed treatment area. Keep all heavy equipment off of the proposed treatment area before and after construction. The treatment area should be marked off before construction. This Design is not valid &the system will need to be relocated if failure to protect the areas proposed for On-Site Sewage Treatment occurs. With proper installation and maintenance, this system should have no problem in treating septic effluent effectively. Nothing other than human waste, toilet tissue, laundry, showers, water softener etc. should be disposed of into the septic tanks. Iron filters must be diverted out of the system. Garbage disposals are not recommended, due to adding more solids &fine solids passing through to the system. Excessive amounts of soaps, cleaning agents 8 chlorine agents may kill the bacteria needed to treat septic effluent. Additives are not recommended. Recommend to pump & clean your tanks through the manhole by a certified pumper every 2 years. Check with your pumper to set up a schedule. . even B.
