GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Applications for septic system permits may be mailed or submitted in person at the City
Offices; however, permits will not be mailed out. The permit must be picked up in person
at the City Offices and work must not begin unless the permit card is on the job site.
2. Permits will be issued only to contractors holding a Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency(MPCA) Septic System Installers License.
3. All work must be done in accordance with the approved septic system design. Design reports
are not considered appro��ed ur�less accom�anied by the "City �f Orono Septic System
Approval" cover sheet signed by the Cit�� Inspector.
4. The following inspections will be required for all septic systems:
A. Pre-installation site inspection to include inspector, installer, and general contractor.
B. Tank installation prior to covering.
C. Drainfield trench installation prior to covering. For mounds, inspection is required after
rough up but prior to sand placement (sand will be jar tested for silt content), and again
during pressure distribution piping installation in the rock bed.
D. Final inspection to verify proper final cover depths and to verify that all pump stations
(where required) components are functional and comply with codes.
5. 1 ndividual holding MPCA Installers License shall be present during all inspections. A 24-hour
notice is required for all inspections.

THIS IS NOT A PERMIT. This is a design approval form which must accompany the site plan.
A permit must be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation.
NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans must have prior approval ofthe
inspector (952-249-4600) Call for inspection 24 hours in advance.
ALL DRAINFIELD AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to building site excavation and
fencing must remain in place until final site grading. Approval to pour footings will not be granted
until the Inspections Department has verified the primary and alternate sites are protected.
NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND is allowed within 20' oftested drainfield sites ever.

This site has an existing on-site sewage treatment system. The existing house and
system will be abandoned for new construction. The existing tanks will be abandoned,
pumped and filled with soil. The existing wefl wil! also need to be abandoned.
This on-site sewage treatment system is designed for a Type 1, six bedroom home, in
accordance with the Minnesota Pollution Controf Agency Chapter 7080 and local
ordinances.
The soils on this site are a clay loam. The seasonatly saturated soils were located at
20" to 34" (redox features). Due to the seasonally saturated soils, a Pressurized Mound
System will need to be installed to treat septic effiuent_ The bottom of the rock must be
located at least 3' above the saturated soils.
The soils at a depth of 12" have a percolation rate of 18.5mpi.
A lift pump will be needed in the lower level to keep the tanks shallow.
A pumping chamber will need to be insta{led to lift the effluent to the treatment area.
The power supply and switches must be located outside the manhole and pumping
ci�arnber in a weati��er proor' enciosure. k warniny device must be rnstalied with a iight
and sound device, this is in case of a pump faifure.

The manifo{d and supply line pipe must have back drainage to the pumping chamber.
The distribution pipes shall have their ends capped. Be sure the rock and sand fill
material are clean. The sod layer betow the entire mounded area must be tumed over,
just break up the sod, be sure not to over woric.
All neighboring wells are {ocated greater than 100' away from the proposed treatment
area.
Keep afl heavy equipment off of the proposed treatment area before and after
construction. The treatment area should be marked off before construction. This
Design is not valid & the system wiil need to be relocated if failure to protect the areas
proposed for On-Site Sewage Treatment occurs.
With proper installation and maintenance, this system should have no problem in
treating septic efftuent effectively.
Nothing other than human waste, toilet tissue, laundry, showers, water softener etc.
should be disposed of into the septic tanks. Iron filters must be diverted out of the
system. Garbage disposals are not recommended, due to adding more soiids & fine
solids passing through to the system. Excessive amounts of soaps, anti-bacterial
soaps, cleaning agents & chlorine agents may kill the bacteria needed to treat septic
effluent. Additives are not recommended. Recommend to pump 8� clean your tanks
through the manhole by a certified pumper every 2 years. Check with your pumper to
set up a schedule.
