Dear Mr. Reimer:
It has come to the attention of this Department that you have
recently constructed a deck on your property at 945 Forest Arms
Lane.
The letter is to inform you that building permits are required
for deck construction in the City of Orono. Please return the
enclosed permit application and the required submittals before
February 11, 1991. If you have any questions or if you have a
problem meeting this deadline, please feel free to contact me at

Re: Deck Construction Without a Building Permit
Dear Mr. Reimer:
The City appreciates your efforts to eliminate an eyesore to
the neighbors and to make your deck safe to walk on. The City's
goals are the same. By requiring a building permit, City staff
ensures proper setbacks from property Iines (to prevent visual
clutter and fire hazards ) and requires structures to meet
building code requirements to make sure that they are safe to
walk on. The City would consider a repair to be replacing some
decking and a joist or two. Your deck has been completely
replaced with all new materials with the exception of guardrail
posts that were salvaged from the original deck.
To verify setbacks the City must require surveys from all
property owners proposing improvements. When a deck is proposed,
the Zoning Department will except a surveyor's verification of
setbacks (10' sides and 30' rear). To verify the structure meets
the building code, the City requires applicants to provide a plan
showing the following:
1. joist sizes;
2. decking size;
3. beam size;
4 . post spacing; .
5 . footing retail;
6 . guardrail detail.
Please submit the above items with a building permit
application before March 25, 1991. If you have any questions or
