The system was instalied on March 3, 1972 by Murphy Plumbing. A summary of the inspection is below. Septic Tank Condition 1. Pumpout not needed at this time. The septic system is non-compliant due to a lack of a three foot separation distance between the bottom of the drainfield to the seasonally high watertable. The three foot requirement is a State Code, not a City Code. A soil boring was conducted to determine the depth of the seasonally watertable. The septic system must be replaced by December 31,2008. Enclosed is a list of state licensed septic contractors who work in Orono on a regular basis. Also enclosed is a fact sheet explaining how a septic system functions properly. Finally, an as-built drawing is enclosed that shows the approximate location of the septic system. DuFresne 475 North Ferndale Road Wayzata, MN 55391 Monday, May 8, 1995 Steve Weckman City of Orono Septic System Inspector P O Box 66 Crystal Bay, MN 55323-066 Dear Mr. Weckman: I am writing to provide you with information relating to the required pumping of our septic system in 1994 and 1995. Both instances were mainly related to a malfunctioning water softener. The details are as follows: 1) In January of 1994, while we were on vacation, the timer on our water softener stopped functioning and allowed the softener to continuously recycle; creating a constant discharge of water into the septic system. Upon our return we had the timer replaced and the septic pumped. 2) Your office notified us of a septic discharge situation on approximately February 25, 1995. Finding this unusual that the septic would be in that condition only after one year of service we decided to thoroughly investigate. We found several situations that required immediate attention, which were as follows: a) We discovered a broken valve on the water softener that allowed water to be continuously discharged to the septic system. We had the water softener replaced and have had no reoccuning problems since. b) We further discovered that the humidifier was set at forty- five percent and was continuously discharging overflow water. The setting was lowered which resulted in no further water overflow discharge. c) Our investigation also revealed that two water closets were running continuously and required new apparatus. This work was completed. It appears that the major problem for us has been the water softener, which has been replaced. In addition the other factors contributing to our water flow problems have been eliminated. Sincerel - Thomas P.
