The C.ity of Orono does not have the means nor personnel to inspect
exist�.ng private wellls for current physical or mechanical condition,
and does not certify their condition. The City has adopted the
MiT�nesota Department of Iiealth Water Wel ]. Construction Code, which
set.s c:riteria for the construction and location of wells. However, as
of January 1, 1990, the Minnesota Department of Health has sole
jurisdiction regarding well code compliance.
The City does not have facilities to test private wells for water
quality. Parties requesting a water test for mortgage purposes are
referred to private testing laboratories.
The City of Orono has no we 11 inspection program, and does not have
the means nor personnel to inspect properties to verify whether wells
exist on the property or whether all wells on the property have been
legally sealed. Currently, local well drillers are voluntarily
providing the City with copies of well records for wells that they
dri 11, and we 11 abandonment records for we 1 ls that they abandon.
The City of Orono, at the we 11 dri 1 ler's request, wi 11 inspect the
proposed location of any new well installations to assist in
determining proper locations meeting required sanitary setbacks. All
other types of well inspections are referred to the Minnesota Health
Department (623-5100).
Regarding 1205 Dickenson Street, the City has no information about the
existing well. Private wells are necessary in this area of the City
because there is no municipal water system available.
