Re: Landscaping Do's and Don'ts for Mound Systems, Quick Reminder
Do plant and maintain a full cover of grass and keep mowed to a normal height, this grass cover aids
in the evaporation of large amounts of effluent (the liquid left after the "othe?' stuff has been removed)
in the summer time and aliows the mound system to help breakdown nitrogen in the effluent.
Do water the grass over the mound in extreme dry conditions, sparingly.
Do avoid unnecessary foot traffic over the mound, mow it and stay off af it, This is especialiy true in the
winter time. Even human foot traffic can cause frost to penetrate the mound resulting in potential
freezing problems.
Do inspect your mound system annually for winter kill, (reseed i` necessary) animal damage,
(burrowingjr signs o`potential failure.
Do not plant trees or shrubs on the mound system, smailer trees and shrubs may be pianted at the
edges. Remember, that sunshine is the key to a healthy mound system.
Do ask questions, if you have any concerns or questions concerning your raaourad syster
please feel free to call me, B can be reached at 952-249-4626.

Subject: Septic Sites
Date: December 5, 2000
The proposed septic sites at the above stated property appear to meet all minimum requirements of
Chapter 7080 and the Orono Septic Code except one. The mound area it self is not compacted but
there is compaction within twenty feet of the toe of the mound. The compaction actually comes right
up to the toe of the mound. I have talked with the property owner(Jon Stern) and he does not plan
to build on the site for 2-3 years. Steve Schirmers of S-P Testing recommends to rip the soil 18"
deep in the compacted area around the mound. This should help loosen up the soil and assure
movement through out the soil profile.
Enclosed is a copy of the letter received from Mr. Schirmers recommending to rip the soil around
the sight. This appears to be the best solution to break up the soil and loosen up the compaction.
The soil ripping should only occur in the area of compaction and not in the designated mound site.

Recommend to rip the soil wfttt a frost ripper or something similar approximately 1$"
deep in the northeast& east comer of the proposed mound site_ This will loosen up the
soil and help assure movement through the soil profle. This should be aompleted 20'
out from the proposed toe of the mound to meet city cde. Home mnstruCtian is not
proposed for 2 fio 3 years, ripping of the soii should be oompleted by spring o2001.
