Whereas, safety improvements along a portion of Hwy 12 between Wayzata Boulevard
and County Road 6 are needed to improve the safety of our residents and of those from our
surrounding communities; and
Whereas, this portion of highway has seen multiple crossover fatalities, resulting in
demands for increased safety improvements, and
Whereas, S.F. No 2467 and H.F. No. 2673 appropriates $15,000,000 from the trunk

from Wayzata Boulevard to the Orono city border; and
Whereas, 18 months ago cities and police agencies along a 38 mile stretch of Hwy 12
formed the Highway 12 Safety Coalition; and
Whereas, the Hwy 12 Safety coalition has been working with MNDOT to identify safety
improvements for this stretch of highway; and
Whereas, there continues to be fatal crashes along this stretch of highway, the highway is
unforgiving and has resulted in nearly double the fatal and severe crashes when compared to
similar highways in Minnesota; and
Whereas, the City of Orono has an interest in protecting the residents and commuting
traffic; and
Whereas, the Orono Police Department continues to partner with other law enforcement
agencies engaging the community, educating motorist of the dangers on distracted driving,

roadway; and
