A summary of the inspection is below. Septic Tank Condition 1. Pumpout needed within one year (last pumpout 10/9/97). The septic system is a compliant system, meaning it meets all or most current City and State Standards. Enclosed is a list of licensed contractors who work in Orono on a regular basis. This list is enclosed simply for your reference in case your septic system needs maintenance in the future. Also enclosed is a fact sheet explaining your septic system and how it functions. Finally, an as-built drawin is enclosed showing the appromate location of the septic system. It is recommended not to store any materials on the mound drainfield site. This could cause compaction and the mound could possibly fail, becoming a non-compliant system. If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact me at the City Offices at 249-4600. The system meets the required separation from the bottom af the rock bed &redox features. At the time of the inspection, efflunt was ponding in the rock bed & very near surface discharging, wet at the surFace. The system is classified as an imminent threat to public health &safety 8will need to be upgraded within 10 months or as determined by the City of Orono. The tanks were opened which found the tanks dead, bacteria not living. The effluent in the pump tank was a gray milky color indiceting the bacteria is not living. The cause of this is from large amounts of disinfectarts, anti-bacteial soaps, etc. which will cause the rock bed to plug. A jar test was completed on the sand used to build the mound which found 3/8"to 1/2" of sediment, only 1/8" is allowed & is not classified as clean sand which could also be part of the cause of the faPure. It may be possible to remove the rock bed & sand & rebuild the mound. A design would need #o be completed prior to the work being completed. The cost for the design would be$550.00 with a credit of$100.00 from the compliance = $450.00. If the mound cannot be rebuilt, the cost fior a new mound design will be $650.00. The credit for the compliance will be for checking the existing mound ta see if it can be rebuilt. Steven B.
