MEASURE SCUM AND SLUOGE ACCUMULATIONS 1 N THE SEPTIC TANK , D-36 Part 3: Gravelless Options for Trench Systems The Gravelless Trench has been used in Texas since 1971. It is an extremely viable option for onsite sewage treatment in Minnesota, and testing and data show that it is as reliable as a trench filled with gravel. As a result, it has been adopted as a standard system for use in Minnesota. (See Figure D-33.) The idea of using something other than rock to hold the trenches apart is not new. Chapter 7080 currently recognizes two acceptable options. The first is gravelless pipe, which is corrugated pipe surrounded by a synthetic fabric. The second is a chamber made out of a nondegradable material, typically plastic, used to hold the soil apart. Natural soil has been used to construct gravelless systems, and they should be backfilled with natural soil. Do not backfill with drainfield rock. If an excavation is only 2 feet wide and has been filled with gravel with the pipe on the inside, the biomat will not develop at the pipe-gravel interface, but will instead develop at the rock-soil interface. Instead of having a 3-foot-wide trench, the size has been effectively cut down to a 2-foot-wide trench, causing a potential problem. Tree roots do not affect gravelless systems. The solidity of the joints and the other parts of the system allow placement of this system close to trees. The system may, however, cause potential damage to nearby tree roots, but the tree roots will not affect the system. Advantages of a Gravelless System O It can be relatively shallow. O It is easy to install. O It is lightweight and can be carried into remote, difficult-to-reach sites. It is also easy to handle and deliver. O Little cleanup is required after installation. O It can be installed on a steep slope because of the minimal amount of equipment necessary for installation. , . . . D-37 . O It is easy to lay out. O Material is consistently sized. Disadvantages of a Gravelless System O No sizing flexibility exists. O Potential problems can occur in areas of fine sand. O Cost of materials is dependent on manufacturers. . Gravelless Pipe System Gravelless pipe is a corrugated pipe used in place of gravel for a trench system. This pipe typically has an inside diameter of 8-10 inches. The corrugations are usually 1/2 inch, with 3/4-inch separations. For propriclnry producls consult Holes Located manufacturers perlormance crileria. 24 at 4 and 8 O'Clock Figure D-33 D-38 To meet code requirements, the corrugated pipe also has to have 1/2- inch holes in the pipe bottom. Typically, manufacturers place the holes at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. (This placement is not a code :equirement.) Gravelless pipe systems are allowable, since the rock that traditionally separates trenches provides little or no treatment of the effluent prior to it being dispersed into the soil. Any type of system that holds the soil apart is acceptable as long as it has an established loading rate. The loading rate for gravelless pipe systems was developed through testing in Minnesota. The testing consisted of breaking systems in different soils into small pieces and measuring wastewater flow into the section and out of the section. The resulting loss of effluent was the soil loading factor. By breaking these systems into relatively small pieces, the long-term loading rate was determined quickly and a good design number has been established. The loading rate for a 10-inch gravelless pipe was found to be . equivalent to that of a 3-foot-wide trench with 6 inches of rock below the pipe. The S-inch pipe (inside diameter) was equivalent to a 2-foot-wide trench with 6 inches of rock. These loading rates are key to the design of the system. Potential problems Fine sands have been found to develop a slower long-term acceptance rate, even though they have the same permeability and water flow characteristics as a medium sand. During field reviews, this problem has been noted most often with fine sands. One of the keys to making a gravelless system work is choosing the proper synthetic fabric for wrapping the pipe. O Fabric that is too elastic will collapse against the pipe as dirt is put back around the pipe, not allowing sewage to move around the outside. O Fabric that is too stiff or too thick (or both) will not allow movement of water out of the system. O Appropriate fabric allows sewage to flow around the corrugations so that a biomat can develop around the entire pipe (which is why the sizing factors relate to a wider trench). Some evidence suggests that the fabric also wicks the effluent around the outside of the pipe, using the entire depth of the system. This wicking will also move moisture closer to the surface and allow greater evapotranspiration.
