1, Applications for septic system permits may be mailed or submitted in person at the Ciry
Offices; however, permi�s will no[ be mailed out. The permit must be picked up in
person at the Ciry Offices and work must no[be�in unless the permit card is on the job
site. J
2. permits will be issued only to concractors holdin� a City oi Orono Septic System
Installers License.
3, All work must be done in accordance �vith the approved septic system desijn. Desi�n
repores are not considered approved unless accompanied by the "City of Orono Septic
System Approval" cover sheec si�ned by the City Inspector.
4, The follow•in� inspections will be required for all septic systems: _ .
A. Pre-installation site inspection to include i.nspector, installer, and general concractor.
B. Tank installation prior to coverin�.
C. Drainfield trench installation prior to coverin�. For mounds, inspection is requued
after rouQh-up buc prior to sand placement (sand wiil be jar tested for silt content),
and a�ain durin� pressure distribution pipin� installation in the rock bed.
D. Final inspection to verify proper final cover depths and to verify that all pump station
(where required) componenu are functional and comply with codes.
5, Individual holdin�NfPCA Installer Cercificate shall be present durin� inspections: A 2`�"
hour notice is required for all inspections.

with die follo�ving COnullents: The septic tank capacity for a seasonal recreational cabin
with three bedrooms according to MPCA rules is 1000 gallons. The current Orono
municipal code requires two 1000 gallon tanks for any system. Due to the seasonal
use, the difficulty of transporting s.upplies to the Island, and the fact that the
City standards far exceed the State Rules, two tanks of 1000 and 500 allons will be allowe
THIS 1S NOT A PERMIT. This is a design approval form which must accompany the site pian. A permit must
be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation. A list of currently licensed septic contractors is
enclosed.
NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans and specs must have prior.approval of the
Inspector (473-7357). Call for inspections 24 hours in advance.
ALL DRAINFIELD AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to building site excavation and fencing must remain
in place uiltil final site grading. Approval to pour footings will not be granted until tlie Inspections Department
has verified that primary and alternate sites are adequately protected.
NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND (cars, tcucks, earth moving equipment, etc.) is allowed within 20'
of tested drainfield sites either before or after system construction. Compaction of these areas could render them
unusable prohibiting the timely completion and or limiting the long term use of the property.
A site copy will be available at the City Of�ices for the septic contractor.

This On-Site Sewage Treatment System is Designed for a Type 111, three bedroom
home (218 gal/day), in accordance with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Chapter
7080 and local ordinances.
The soils on this site are SCS soils mapped - HbC - Hayden loam. The seasonally
saturated soils were located at 66" & 70" (mottled soil) . The bottom of the treatment
area must be located at least 3' above the seasonally saturated soils. A standard trench
system may be installed. The plumbing will need to be changed to exit the cabin to the
south. The existing tank off of the northeast comer of the cabin wilt need to be
abandoned, pumped and filled with soil. A new 1000 gallon and a 500 gallon tank will
need to be installed. Insulate all the tanks to prevent freezing. The tanks will be plastic,
so use spray polyurethane which will insulate and add strength to the tanks.
The soils at a depth of 3�" have a percolation rate averaging 37.3 mpi.
All neighboring wells are located greater than 75' away from the proposed treatment
area to the south and 100' away to the north.
Keep all heavy equipment off of the proposed treatment area before and after
construction. The treatment area should be marked off before construction. This
Design is not valid & the system will need to be relocated if failure to protect the areas
proposed for On-Site Sewage Treatment occurs.

With proper instatlation and maintenance, this system should have no problem in
treating septic effluent effectively.
Nothing other than human waste, laundry, showers, toilets, etc. should be disposed of
into the septic tanks. Garbage disposals are not recommended, due to adding more
solids & fine solids passing through to the system. Excessive amounts of soaps,
cleaning agents & chlorine agents may kill the bacteria needed to treat septic effluent.
Additives are not recommended. Recommend to pump & Gean your tanks through the
manhole by a certified pumper every 2 years. Check with your pumper to set up a
schedule.
