The OWS was deemed in non-compliance by others and in need of placement. The proposed OWS site is predominantly vegetated with mowed Kentucky blue grss ith a few trees on an 8-14% slope. Soil Conditions — The Hennepin County soil survey mappe the proposed drain field area as the Lester Series. The Lester Series is the unofficial Minnesota state s il and is very common in Des Moines Lobe glacial till deposits of central Minnesota, specifically Wright and Hennepin Counties. A copy of the description for the Lester Series is included i Appendix A. The soil survey indicates the soils in the Lester Series are very deep, well drained lo y soils formed in glacial till. Three soil observation pits were completed in the area of the propos d drain field area, see Figure 1. The soil profile descriptions closely matched the soil survey descripti n of the Lester Series in the proposed drain field location (S 1 and S2). Soil observation pits 1 and 2 in the drain field area indicat the site is underlain by high chroma loam and clay loam soils to approximately 6 feet. The parent m terial for the area, high chroma loam soils with many threads of calcium carbonates (often misidenti ed as low chroma iron reductions), were found to the depth of the borings. Few gray sand coatings o ped faces, calcium carbonates, and reddish iron concretions (referred to as ochres in the geologic cultu ) were observed. These soil features are a result of the soil parent material not a fluctuating seasonal w ter table. Moving down slope (S3) yielded the observation of a perch d water condition at approximately 2.5 feet below the surface. It is believed that a higher clay content i the Bt horizon and the increase watershed area moving down slope causes an epi-saturation condition above the C-horizon parent material. This area was avoided with the proposed drain field. Two ercolation tests were erformed at the locations o Fi P p gure 1. The depth of the tests were , approximately 22 and 24 inches. The results of the tests wer favorable and are found in Appendix A. 1 ' , The results of the soil analysis and percolation tests indicate that the site can support a standard ' subsurface drain field at the proposed area depicted on Figure 1 and 2. A soil sizing factor of 2.2 square feet per gallon per day has been selected. Sizin of Treatment S sy tem — The OWS is designed for a four-bedroom home with a garbage disposal. The estimated daily flow for a four-bedroom home is 600 gallons. Sink and toilet fixtures need to be monitored closely to ensure proper operation. A leaking facet or toilets can more than double the daily flow to the OWS and cause hydraulic failure. Descrivtion of the Treatment Process— • Primary Treatment - Sewage is gravity discharged from the house to a septic tank. Natural biological activities taking place inside of the septic tank will separate solids and suspended particles. Solids are reduced to some extent through this process. • Secondary Treatment— Effluent from the clear zone of the se tic tank flow ' p s to a lift chamber and is filtered prior to discharge. Suspended particles larger than 1/8" are filtered out by the effluent filter. Final Treatment— Effluent is um ed to a new drain fi P p eld. As the effluent trickles down into the soil biochemical processes remove harmful viruses and bacteria. Descri tion of Treatment S stem— See fi re and d p v ( gu esign sheets for additional detail.) • Septic Tank — 2,000 gallon two compartment Belle Plaine Block and Tile concrete septic tank. Install septic tank per manufacturer's recommendations. • Lift Tank — 1,000 gallon single compartment Belle Plaine Block and Tile concrete septic tank (see Appendix B for detail). • Septic/Lift Tank Risers — 24" diameter heavy corrugated PVC pipe. A watertight seal must be created between top of tank and the each riser. • Septic/Lift Tank Riser Cover — 24" diameter fiberglass cover with gasket. Tank riser covers should include insulation. Do not bury riser cover. • Pump System — Screened vault effluent pump system to deliver a minimum 20 gallons per minute with a total head of 20 feet. Install a schedule 40 PVC discharge pipe to pump and extend discharge pipe through riser wall. Install a camlock on the discharge pipe between pump and the riser for easy disconnect. Drill a 3/16" weep hole at the invert of the 90 degree bend in the discharge pipe to allow drain back. Install all high-pressure fittings. • Drain Field — Excavate the drain field trenches as depicted on Fi re 2. De th of excavation P shall be 2 — 2.5 feet on the uphill side and level. Place High Capacity InfiltratorGravelless Chambers in the trench bottom connected by gravity drop boxes. The pump will discharge to the first drop box. ' Back fill with native soil and seed for cover. 2 ' t ' Limitations - Our investigation, layout, design, and reom endations are based on data submitted. If conditions considerably different from those described i this report are encountered, we must be notified. If proposed construction is changed, we must be otified to evaluate the effect of the changes on the wastewater system. Any changes to the design mu t be approved by the designer and will be assessed additional design costs. If changes are made to the design without the knowledge and approval of the designer the design shall be void. All construct on is to be in accordance with the ISTS regulations. Pipe type and size, installation requirem nts, septic tank construction, and other specifications not depicted in our report are to conform to I TS regulations.
