RE: Breezeway Construction
Dear Mr. Stevenson:
As per our conversation on March 10, 2004, a building permit is required for construction in the
City of Orono. The connection you constructed between the house and garage requires a permit.
The building code requires frost footings at a depth of 42"below grade to prevent frost heave.
This is very important in this area because of heavy clay soils that retain moisture and expand
when frozen. When the earth expands it will damage the structure. Therefore The City must
require you to remove the structure or to obtain a building permit and place frost footings under
it. You may find a structural engineer to design a fix also.
Please remove the structure ar submit an acceptable plan by March 31, 2004. If you have a
problem meeting this deadline or if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at my
