"'- +
' P ,, . ,''`
in the City of Orono, Minnesota d.
"a-.,,
Dear Mr. Abbott: `''
STS Consultants, Ltd. (STS) performed a preliminary compliance evaluation of the individual
sewage treatment system (ISTS) located south of your house at 1000 South Brown Road in the
City of Orono, Minnesota. The purpose of the preliminary compliance evaluation was to
determine the vertical separatior between the bottom of the drainfield porticn of the ISTS and
soil mottling. The compliance evaluation was limited to soil descriptions and determination of
the depth to the base of drainfield rock in the two drainfield trenches of the ISTS system. No
evaluation ot the septic tanks or distributiGn devices of the I5TS system was performed.
Scoe of Work
Three hand auger soil borings were advanced at locations neir the middle of the drainfield
trenches, see Figure l, Appendix. Soil descriptions were made following U.S. Department of
Agriculture - Soil Conservation Service nomenclature (Soil Survey Manual, USDA-SCS, 1981).
Soil colors were determined using Munsell soil color charts. Soil boring logs are found in the
Appendi. 11e depth to the base of the drainfield rock in the trenches was determined by
pushing a probe rod through the drainfield rock to the underlying soil.
Results and Discussion
The soil boring logs show that soil mottling was encountered at various depths. Soil mottling
was observed at a depth of 3.7 feet at soil boring B-1, upslope of the first drainf'ield trench. Soil
mottling was observed at a depth of 7.7 feet at B-? at a location downslope from the second
drainfield trench. Soil mottling was observed at a depth of 6.7 feet at soil boring B-3 located
between the rivo drainfield trenches. The base of the drainfield rock in the first trench was 4.3
feet below the ground surface at P-1 and 2.7 feet at P-3. The base of the drainfield rock in the
se;,ond trench was at a depth of 2. feet at P-?. No sewage effluent was observed in any of the
testholes performed. These results, converted to elevations, are tabulated on Figure 1.
STS Consultants Ltd.
Consulting Engineers
3650 Annapolis Lane
Suite 120
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55447
612.559.1900/Fax 612.559.4507
