AARDCOVER ORD�TAi�TCE - In 197�, the Orono Ciry Council adopted an ordinance lunitinQ
the percenta�e of lot area that can be covered with impervious surface ("hardcover") such as
roofs, driveways, sidewalks, etc. on properties located within 1,000 feet of a lake. Studies have
shown that sediments, oils, and debris carried into the lake from hiahly urbanized areas have
a detrimental impact on the qualiry of water in the lake. The intent of Orono's ordinance is to
ensure that rainfall run-off will be cleansed by filtering throu�h arassed or vegetated yard areas
before entering the lake.
