Adaptive to a grow in many different soil mediums. Drought tolerant. Loves full sun. Will provide winter screening if not cut down. • Prairie Fire Switch Grass – 4-5’ in height and 3’ in width. Poor soil condition tolerant. Used as a screening plant in summer, fall and winter (if not cut down). Grows in full sun. • Sea Green Juniper – Vertical height of 2-4’ and 4-5’ in width, Resistant to animal chewings, tolerant of poor soil conditions, very hardy, thrives in full sun and will drape over walls. • Forsythia – Reaches 3’ -9’ in height and 6-10’ in width, very hardy for our climate, resistant to animal chewings. Tolerant to a wide range of soil conditions. • Red Gnome* Dogwood – reaches 4-5’ in height and 5-6’ in width, grows well in full sun. Is not particular to a soil type and is tolerant to dry conditions. One of its suggested uses is for screening. • Red Snowberry – 4-5’ in height and 4-8’ in width, it is a spreading plant commonly used in bank plantings. Tolerant of most soil conditions and drought. It is also resistant to animal chewings. • Common Orange Lily. Typically, 2-3’ in height and will continue to spread as long there is space to do so. Adaptable to a variety of soils, including sandy soils. Drought tolerant. Insect and animal tolerant. A couple notes about the updated plan; • The bottom two walls now have Karl Foerster grasses and Orange Lillies in front of them for screening. Plants will be spaces appropriately. • For the space at the bottom of angling stairs, no plants are being installed as there needs to be sufficient space for turning and walking to the next set of stairs to get to the boathouse. • No plants are being added to the left side of the boathouse as there is a door on that side of it and putting plants there will impede the opening of the door. • The Stella d’Oro at the top of the wall have been removed as the final surface will be covered with grass, either seeded and covered or sodded. One other note to add. It is important to understand that one cannot purchase plants of the mature heights and widths listed above. Nurseries simply do not grow them that big. The container sizes listed on the plan are common size sold at most nurseries. Perennials can double in size from one year to the next. Ornamental grasses can reach mature growing heights in one full season. Many shrubs can, and do, grow as much, and even more, than 1’ each year.
