Hi,
I have reviewed the drawings you sent to me of the Olson Residence remodeling project in Wayzata.
At the main level there is an existing opening between the Dining Room and Kitchen which will be widened to a 5’-6”
opening. The wall is basically a non-bearing wall since the floor joists above run parallel to the wall.
I recommend using a double 2x10 for the new door header with one trimmer stud and one full height stud at each
jamb. Install blocking in the floor below each jamb, if needed. The wall in the lower level is a masonry wall which
can easily support the loads from the jambs above.
