Dear City Administrator Dustin Rief, and members of the Orono Planning Commission,
Please see below our written opposition to 560 Big Island's application for variances and yard set backs to be
reviewed for your June Planning Commission meeting.
We are writing in opposition to the proposed variance on 560 Big Island. Big Island recently experienced a variance
on the property northwest of our property 720 Big Island ( and PIDs 2211723130001,2211723420002). As a result,
the Iand clearing and structure site of that property has opened up views that once were private and blocks lake
view. Instead of seeing the beauty of untouched natural woodland, we see an oversized accessory building/structure
better suited to suburban plan rather than a historic Island setting. The same would now happen on our south line.
Each variance reduces the unique Island atmosphere, and the loss of privacy for the homes on the island. Adding
another structure to Big Island 560 would simply add to this disturbing trend. Smaller and smaller lots are putting up
more and larger square footage structures. Pushing out to the property line, and plopping a large structure unduly
affects neighbors property investments. It also results in the loss of character and long standing atmosphere of
privacy and natural beauty on the island. With this said, we strongly oppose this variance and ask you help in
keeping Big Island a beautiful and special place.
