3. The pump station apj•"fired to contain layers of floating and
submerged solids, indicating the need for a thorough
cleaning and pumpout.
4. The solids appearing in the pump tank normally indicate the
need for pumping out the first tank and repairing/replacing
baffles as necessary. Our records indicate that a manhole
to the surface was not provided when this tank was installed,
making it extremely difficult to properly maintain. This
fact, coupled with the lack of a second septic tank and the
need to be pumping only liquid effluent to the drainfield,
indicate yearly pumpouts of the first tank would be a prudent
maintenance measure. Based on the above, I would recommend
that the first tank be uncovered, pumped out to remove
solids, baf f les be checked, and the tank retrof itted with a
manhole to just below the surface (an opening for manhole
extension exists on the inlet end of the tank).
5. A tank high -water -level (pump failure) alarm is located next
to the refrigerator inside the house.
No permit is required for the work described above. However, I would
like to inspect the system again when the pump station is being
serviced. I would suggest you contact the contractor who installed
the system to do the repairs (Keith Clark of Westonka Plumbing, 472-
4959).
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions on any of this.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Gafffron

Dear Ms. Kurzhal:
Subject: Septic System Problems, 2943 Farview Lane
Per your request, I made an inspection of the septic system at 2943
Farview Lane on August 2, 1984, and wish to make the following
observations:
1. The Mound -type drainfield systems shows no evidence of
surface seepage and appears to be accepting the current
sewage flow. This was the first mound system installed in
Orono and after six years of use appears to be functioning as
designed.
2. The pump station is not functioning correctly and needs
immediate attention. when the station was opened for
inspection, it was noted that the pump turn -on float had been
placed permanently in the "on" position by setting it on a
board above the pump. The pump was running constantly even
with no sewage inflow (the house is empty) and would likely
burn out in a short period of time. I placed the f loat in it's
property "off" operating position, then placed it in the
"switch on" position. The float did not turn the pump on as
it is designed to do. It is likely that the last person who
serviced this pump realized the float switch was faulty and
rigged it to run constantly rather than repair or replace the
switch.
THE PUMP STATION APPEARS NON-FUNCTIONAL A": THE PRESENT TIME
AND NEEDS TO BE SERVICED BEFORE FURTHER USAGE OF THE HOUSE
