1.Percolation Rate, Type of System_.
22.3 minutes per inch. Standard System.
2. Proposed Flow Rate.
4 bedrooms @ 150 G.P.D. = 450 G.P.Q.
3. Soil Treatment Area Required.
Use 2.0 factor x 450 G.P.D. = 900 Sq. Ft. minimum.
4. Size and Number of Trenches.
300 lineal feet of trenches 3 feet wide - yuO Sq. Ft. These trenches would
be spaceu a minimum ,f 7.5 feet center to center and be about 2 fee,. Jeep
in the natural soil.
5. Drainfield Rock Needed.
50.0 cubic yards of rock is needed to have 12 inches under and 2 inches over
a 4 inch distribution pipe.
6. Septic Tanks.
2 septic tanks of at least 1000 and 750 gallons are needed. It appears that
a third pumping tank will not be needed depending on the final house el,va-
tion.
7. Additional Information.
All construction and materials must adhere to the provisions of the City of
Orono. All grading and construction traffic must be kept off the primary
drainfield area as well as the new alternate site. Drainage must: be diverted

SUBJECT: Dick Howell - Variance - Septic System Review
Tract B, R.L.S. 1098
The applicant wishes to build a new home on an existing lot of
approximately 1.5 acres with no City sewer or water available.
In addition, he is asking for a front setback variance to allow
construction of the house near the west side of the lot
presumably due 'o the extreme slopes and to keep from encroaching
on the drainfield sites.
Note that the application shows a different house proposal than
the one shown on the site eva]-.ation report submittedi. The
longer, narrow configuration would likely encroach :much less on
the drainfield sites.
The primary and alternate sites tested are located on a rei:cively
flat area halfway down the steep slopes. Part of '_.his area has
been used recently as an access for the neighbor on the south
in order to bring materials in form septic syscem repair. However,
from the perc test results, compaction in this location was not
a problem. Adequate area appears to exist suitable for trenches
on both primary and alternate sites. The site evaluator did
note that runoff diversion will be necessary to protect the sites
from excess surface water.
Based on the information submitted, I recommend approval of the
application. Approval of the front setback variance appears to
be necessary so as not to encroach on the drainfield areas. The
applicant should be informed that an actual system design and
final site gradi_nq plans must be submitted prior to issuance of
building permits.
