A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT �
OF THE ABANDONMENT OF THE FREIGHT RAIL USE ON THE DAKOTA RAIL
CORRIDOR,AND THE PRESERVATION AND USE OF THE DAKOTA RAIL RIGHT-
OF-WAY AS A CONTINUOUS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR
WHEREAS, the Dakota Railroad comdor has been purchased by the Hennepin County
Regional Railroad Authority(HCRRA); and
WHEREAS, the HCRRA has completed a study of the financial feasibility of restoring
freight rail service on the corridor; and '
WHEREAS,the study has shown it is not fmancially feasible to restore freight rail service
on the comdor, and
• WHEREAS,the abandonment of the freight rail use,and the preservation of the comdor as a
continuous public transportation corridor,is consistent with the City's existing land use plans and the
City's Comprehensive Plan; and
WHEREAS, the preservation of the Dakota Rail right-of-way as a continuous public
transportation corridor is essential to enabling the corridor to effectively serve the current and future
transportation needs of the area; and
� WHEREAS,the Dakota Rail right-of-way is a beautiful,unique,and valuable transportation
comdor that serves the area from Wayzata to Hutchinson; and
WHEREAS, the Dakota Rail Comdor provides a continuous transportation connection
beriveen the cities on the north and west shores of Lake Minnetonka. �
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Orono City Council as follows:
1. The City of Orono strongly supports the abandonment of the freight rail use on the
Dakota Rail Corridor.
2. The City of Orono strongly supports the preservation of the Dakota Rail Corridor as a
continuous public transportation corridor. '
