IN LOT 2, BL,)CK 1, N11RS :;;iY March C, 19,119 As requested , and according to the city of Orono regulations, six percolation tests and three soil borings were taken on March 3-4, 1979. Percolation holes were dug to a depth of 42 inches being o inches in diameter. Boles were dug with a Dayton model a?014 C auger. No frost was encountered and styrofoam was placed over the holes overnight to keep the water from freezing. the soil borings were dug with the Dayton auger to a depthof 42 inches, with a 3" bucket type hand auger being used for the remaining depth. The proposed drainfield area is located in the Lester Loan soil series and yielded an average percolation rate of 9.6 min. uer inch. Discoloration of the soils indicates that the water table will be somewhat higher in the spring than the present water table indicates. However, the requirements for a standard drainfield system are still met. For the proposed 3 bedroom house, 570 square feet of soil treatment area is required. If 2 foot wide trenches are used , three 100 foot long trenches are needed. Each should be spaced 6.5 feet minimum center to center making the total width 13 feet. More lines of shorter lengft can also be used. Lines should be constructed to follow the contours. The lot should also be graded to divert rui►off away from the soil treatment area. Two septic tanks are required. yach should be of 10JO gallon capacity. They should be located at least 10 feet from the house. In addition , if the basement is to be served by the sewer, a oump and t)um,>ing tank will be needed to pump the effluent to the higher drainfield area if the house elevation remains as proposed. The size of riie ..-um -.ing tank shall. be 71->0 gallons. This covers a .3o:i , si z.; of 1CM gallons , a one -day reserve capacity of 450 gallons nor a 3-bedroom home, and I M gallons remaining in the bottom of the tank. The shape of the numning tank depends on the amount to be ;'umpbd and the pum.)-out depth. The nump-oiit depth for submersible pumps is around I) inches. If the desired -pumping quantity is 200 gallons, this is equivalent to 2'.7 cubic feet. Thus, a surface area of ? square feet is required to have 26,7 cu. ft. in a 1 , inch denth. Such a tank could be feet long by 1, feet wide, otc. The tank will have to be at least 3.125 fast high to have the roculred gallon capacity. The pum-) shall discharge at least 600 gallons ?,er hour but no more than .'70o gallons per hour. An a.►arm device shall be installed to warn of piimn failure. We discussed the location of the new drainfield since the proposed area had ' been filled with black dirt. We were also concerned with the water table which mooned to fluctuate greatly in the springtime. I dug another soil boring to check on the water table and to determine the depth of the fill material. It appears that about two feet of fill were placed over the original ground. The water table was reached at a little over six feet deep from the orig- inal ground surface. Discoloration of the soil at five feet indi- oated that the water table is at that depth in wetter seasons. Because of the fluctuating wateir table in this area it is re- commended that shallow trenches be used. Such trenches should be placed six inches to a foot deep in natural soil and covered by a foot of loam material. Thus, if the original proposed area is used, a foot of the current loam fill would have to be removed. Care must also be taken to avoid the Low gas main which was installed thro- ugh the proposed drainfield area. All construction should adhere to the requirements of the Orono on -site sewage treatment manual for shallow trench systems. If there are any questions, please contact me.
