A RESOLUTION REQUESTING HENNEPIN COUNTY TO
PROVIDE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ON COUNTY ROAD 146
WHEREAS, during the summer of 1979, County Road 15 in
Orono will be closed to thru traffic because of construction of a
sewer interceptor by the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission and
because of reconstruction of the Tanager Lake Bridge by Hennepin
County; and
WHEREAS, the Hennepin County Department of Transportation
has established a detour route along County Road 146, South Brown
Road; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of Orono and the citizens of
Orono residing along and beside County Road 146 are concerned with
a potential safety problem occasioned by the resulting increase
in traffic along County Road 146 ; and
WHEREAS, the citizens have presented the City Council with
� petitions citing previous accidents involving injured children and
loss of pets along County Road 146, such petitions being signed by
88 residents citing three injured children, 53 killed dogs, and
numerous clo.se ca11s.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of
the City of Orono concurs with the concerns of the residents and
hereby requests the County of Hennepin to take appropriate action
to provide and improve the safety precautions along County Road 146
between County Road 51 and State Highway 12.
The City Council hereby attaches and transmits the petitions of the
residents to the Hennepin County Department of Transportation and
to the Hennepin County ..Sherifftfor appropriate attention regarding
physical .safety:_improvements and enforcement of safety regulations.
Adopted by the City Council on the 13th day of , 1979 by a
vote of 4,ayes land 0 nays.

On April 2, 1979, County Rd. 15 will be closed from Cty Rd. 51 to Wayzata for
rebuilding the Tanager Lake Bridge and installation of a sewer interceptor line.
� Construction is scheduled to last for 45 working days or about 10 weeks. During
this period, traffic `�rom 15 will be rerouted along county road 146 (Brown Road)
thru Orono and Long Lake to State Highway 12.
Traffic on Brown Road will be increased from 1 ,000 cars per day to 11 ,000 cars
per day! This will turn an already hazardous road into an extremely dangerous
one, jeopardizing the lives of children and pets, and creating difficult access.
This 2 mile stretch of road (Brown Road from 51 to Watertown Road) has no -
significant turns and no stop signs which has created a speedway with speeds 7�
often exceeding 60 mph in 40 mph zone.
