The existing drainfield generally runs east to west approximately along the south property line and may in fact be partially on the Routson's lot. This drainfield is in an area that appears to receive much drainage from your lot, and probably contains seasonally wet soils due to poor drainage and a heavy clay texture. I suspect from the percolation tests taken in 1971 that your front yard may contain soils that are much more conducive to sewage treatment than the existing location. Also, your existing drainfield is probably undersized based on today's standards. I suggest that you contact one of the site evaluators on the attached list to conduct percolation tests and soil borings in your front yard. Two peres and two borings should be adequate to establish whether the soil is capable of supporting a drainfield. A drainfield in the front yard will undoubtedly require a pump from the septic tanks. This is a relatively common procedure. Orono code requires that your sewage be treated and disposed of on your own lot. Any "joint venture" septic system to serve both you and the Routsons would require a variance to our codes and some legal documentation of rights and responsibilities for the system. Due to the existing soil characteristics it seems reasonable that a pump would be needed no matter which lot the system was installed on. I would recommend you keep it on your own lot. I am enclosing a list of licensed septic system installers. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call. While your existing system is not to the point where we would absolutely require repairs or reconstruction, it appears to be functioning marginally and should receive some attention. Sincerely, Michael P. /afron Septic System Inspector MPG:kh Encs.
