Six (6) soil percolation test locations were augered to a depth of 3.0 ft. sleep on April 20, 1977. Water was noted seeping into these holes on completion, and was noted to rise to a depth above 0.5 feet to 2.5 feet within the percolation test hole locations after 24 hours. In addition, five borings which were dug to depths of 8.5 feet below the natural ground surface were filled by water to within 1.5 feet of the ground level 24 hours after the completion of the boring. The soil encountered consisted of a surficial layer of black organic clayey topsoil overlying brown sandy clay to clay-iy sand. On the basis of the ground water observed, the si`e would be unacceptable for an individual soil absorption disposal system since the ground water level ;s less than 6.5 feet below the ground surface or les:; than 4 feet below the drainfield trench as proposed. An alternative system such as a mound system may be applicable at this site. A drawing showing details William C. Kwasny, P.E. We recommend that an intercepting French draw system be installed around the site to effectively intercept lateral ground water flow from the east and south. Such accumulation of water could flow by gravity to lower elevations at the northwest corner of the site. CONSULTING ENGINEERS ■ LAND SURVEYORS ■ SITE PLANNERS July 28, 1977 Minnesota 55323 Septic System Application 190 Cygnet Place p 1!;G 1 1377 VILLAGE 08 OROMU As requested, we have reviewed the subject septic system application which included a si`e visit. As you are aware, the applicaion is for a mound system since there is a high ground water condition. Currently, the mound system is unaccep- table in Orono. However, under the "proposed" variance, and the associated requirements would be applicable. I believe that the existing application may also be filed as a variance to the current code, and it is under this premises that I have reviewed the technical data. Initially, we recommend that the applicant have percolation tests conducted in top layer of soil that is unsaturated. If the percolation rate in the top twelve inches or more of natural surface soil is within 30 to 60 minutes per inch, the site can be considered acceptable if the depth of ground water is greater than 2 to 3 feet. If the general site area has a slower per- colation rate or the ground water is generally less than 2 feet, we would recommend denial of the application. Until that time at which percolation tests and additional groundwater depths are submitted, we cannot complete our review of the application. Actual test results should be included in the requested information with a lot map indicating the location of the tests. Also, the system layout, including the basis for the design, should be submitted; and an alternate site should be identified and investigated in the application, as required in the code. 12805 OLSON MEMORIAL HIGHWAY, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA 55441 TELEPHONE (612) 559-3700 22 NORTH MAIN STREET, HUTCHINSON, MINNESOTA 55350 TELEPHONE (612) 879-8029 SOUTHWEST ENGINEERING DIVISION, MARSHALL, MINNESOTA 56258 TELEPHONE (507) 532-5820 ID: Greg Frank, City Engineer FROM: A. Gentlemen: As directed by your authorization of August 10, 1977, we have completed the soil percolation test at the above referenced property. Six (6) soil percolation test locations were augered to a depth of 3 feet deep on August 12, and tested on August 13, 1977, in accordance with the methods designated by the Minnesota Department of Health, 1971. The attached iog sheet indicates the observed percolation rates at each of the test holes (P-7 through P-12). The observed percolation rates at each of the test holes was within the maximum allowable rate of 60 minutes per inch, as recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health. Based on these observations, the installation of an individual soil absorption system will be acceptable in the area tested. In addition to the above percolation test holes, a single boring was drilled to a depth of 6.5 feet below the existinq ground surface to determine if the water table is less than that depth. According to the readings obtained, it is our opinion ._hat the level o. the ground water at the time of the testing was below that depth. William C. Kwasny, P.E. John P. Gnaedinger, P.E Clyde N. GF:sw Mr. Jerry Finnamore Aujust -15, 1977 Page two Fluctuations in the water level may occur over a wide range, depending upon the amount of precipitation, evaporation, surface runoff, and infiltration which will vary with seasonal changes. Based on the toyt results, installation of an individual soil absorption disposal system should be acceptable for a recommended design rate of 60 minutes per inch, requiring 330 square foot of absorption area per bedroom. The observed water table in the area is at a depth greater than 6.5 feet below the existing ground surface, making an absorption system acceptable according to State Code Regulations. The provisions of the "Ordinance and Code Regulating Individual Sewage Disposal Systems" (1971), as recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health, as well as any local ordinances and codes, should be followed in the design and installation of the disposal system.
