A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CITY OF EXCELSIOR IN
IDENTIFYING PUBLIC NEED FOR CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN
RAILROAD RIGHT-OF-WAY IN THE CITY OF EXCELSIOR
WHEREAS, the Chicago and Northwestern Transportation Company
has notified the City of Excelsior of its intention to file for
abandonment of its Hopkins to Norwood rail line on or about May 31,
1980 , and �
WHEREAS, said rail line runs through the City of Excelsior
with a right-of-way width varying from 50 feet to 100 feet, and
WHEREAS, said rail line corridor provides a convenient link
to many metroplitan area locations if utilized for mass transit purposes,
and
WHEREAS, said rail line right-of-way is also ideally suited
for a public utility corridor through the City of Excelsior, and
WHEREAS, portions of said right-of-way are suited to other

_ public uses such as public parking and local transportation improvement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Orono that Orono supports the City of Excelsior ' s resolution regarding
an overwhelming public need to retain the abandoned Chicago and North-
western Railroad Right-of-Way for future public use such as a mass transit
corridor, public utility corridor, central business district parking
or local transportation improvements.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council requests approval
of the Interstate Commerce_ Commission for a 180 day public use negotiation
period in the event abandonment of said rail line is approved by the
Interstate Commerce Commission.
Adopted by the City Council of the City of Orono, Minnesota at a regular
meeting held June 30 , 1980 . �
