� o� <br /> � O � O CITY of ORONO <br /> � � � RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL <br /> �� ,. ��� No. 6095 <br /> ��kESH�4� <br /> A RESOLUTION <br /> APPROVING THE <br /> BIG ISLAND NATURE PARK <br /> MANAGEMENT PLAN <br /> WHEREAS, in January 2006 the City of Orono purchased for park and <br /> open space purposes a 56-acre property on Big Island in Lake Minnetonka which had <br /> formerly been used as a Veterans Camp; and <br /> WHEREAS, the purchase was in part funded by a grant from the <br /> Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) in exchange for a Conservation Easement <br /> over the entire property, such easement intended to preserve the natural resources of this <br /> unique property, including a maple basswood forest, wetlands, and approximately 7,500 <br /> feet of relatively undeveloped shoreline on Lake Minnetonka; and <br /> � <br /> WHEREAS, the Conservation Easement limits the permitted uses of the <br /> protected property and specifies that the uses may be elaborated and conditioned in a <br /> written Management Plan agreed to by the City of Orono and the MCWD; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Big Island Nature Park Management Plan has been <br /> prepared through a cooperative effort of the City of Orono and MCWD to be consistent <br /> with the principles contained within the Conservation Easement and to address the <br /> preservation of the Park's natural resources; and <br /> WHEREAS, in addition to its primary focus on natural resources, the Plan <br /> has been drafted to document the background leading to the City's acquisition of the site <br /> and define for future City leaders a set of fundamental principles for management of the <br /> Park; to provide a structure for defining and managing the major natural, cultural, <br /> interpretive and recreation resources of Big Island Nature Park; and to establish a general <br /> long-term management direction for Big Island Nature Paxk; and <br /> WHEREAS, the various elements of the Big Island Nature Park <br /> Management Plan are intended to be reviewed by the City Council on a regular basis as <br /> needed to address new and ongoing Park management issues; and <br /> � <br /> Page 1 of 2 <br />
