Dear Mr. Ryerse:
I met with Carl Widmer yesterday and again today to discuss the
various options for repairing your drainfield system. He noted that
his records show a 1200 square foot drainfield which was installed
in 1973. He also indicated that after probing the drainfield and
noting that the effluent level was above the distribution box cover,
the drainfield appears to be quite saturated and probably is being
fully used. I probed the field and concur with his findings.
The 1200 square foot drainfield was extra large compared to most
installed in 1973. However, it is in a bed configuration about 10'
in width rather than in single trenches of 2^5* to 3' width, which
would yield more sidewall area for absorption. Beds are normally
not installed today in Orono unless space is limited.
Our files give no indication that a percolation test was performed
when your house was built. I suspect a very slow percolation rate
may also be influencing the failure of your drainfield. The two
existing septic tanks are substandard in size by todays standards
(code changed in 1978) but appear to be functional. Their use can
be continued.
At this point it is my recommendation that you contact a site
evaluator (partial list enclosed) to locate a suitable site for
replacement/repair of your drainfield. The testing should include
at least one boring and two percolation tests in the proposed area.
When the testing is complete the site evaluator should design a system
based on the soil and site conditions encountered.4
I am enclosing information on site evaluation and system design.
If you have any questions, please call me. It is imperative that
repairs be completed this construction season.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Gaffron
Septic System Inspector
