Mayor Walsh called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL
Orono City Council members present: Mayor Dennis Walsh, City Council Members Matt Johnson,Alisa.
Benson,Richard Crosby III, and Maria Veach. Members absent: None.
Staff present were City Attorney Soren Mattick,Finance Director Maggie Jin,Fire Chief James Van Eyll
and Community Development Director Laura Oakden.

Crosby moved,Johnson seconded,to approve the Agenda and Consent Agenda with item seven
removed.VOTE: Ayes 5,Nays 0.
FINANCE REPORT
10. Second Quarter Financial Update
Finance Director Jin presented the second quarter financial report. She said they anticipate the City will
be at a positive net income position at the end of the year.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT REPORT
Community Development Director Oakden said she had nothing formal on the agenda but updated the
Council on Planning Commission activity and work session updates.

Fire Chief Van Eyll said the purpose of this agenda item was to promote three firefighters to fire officers,
and one to a fire prevention specialist. There were job descriptions approved for these positions at an
earlier meeting,but no compensation rates were approved.
Crosby moved,Benson seconded,to approve the compensation rates of Deputy Chief of Training to
$25.00, Captain to $22.00,Lieutenant to $21.00 and Fire Prevention Specialist to $22.00 per hour.
VOTE: Ayes 4,Nays 1 (Benson).
11. Correspondence with City of Long Lake Fire Service from Orono Fire Department.
Walsh said the City of Long Lake had declined the City of Orono's offer of fire service coverage under
the new Orono Fire Department. He read a letter of response acknowledging the City of Long Lake's
letter and indicating the City had made arrangements with other service partners to cover the lake areas in
the Navarre Service Area now being covered by the new Orono Fire Department, since Orono FD does
not have a boat.
The Council discussed the item and asked questions of staff.
Walsh moved,Crosby seconded,to accept the draft letter to the City of Long Lake as presented.
VOTE: Ayes 4,Nays 1 (Benson).
Van Eyll reported on the expected delivery of the new tanker and call numbers and types from July 8 to
July 15. He said there have been a few more calls in the early weeks than anticipated,but that response
coverage has been good.
CITY ATTORNEY REPORT
City Attorney Mattick said the parties had met and the lawsuit between the City of Orono and Erickson
has been dismissed by mutual agreement of both parties.
COUNCIL COMMITTEE REPORTS
12. Council Committee Reports
The Communications Committee and Long Lake Fire Advisory Committees have met. Veach reported on
the Communications Committee and Veach and Crosby reported on the Fire Advisory Board.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Sandy Whisler,2683 North Shore Drive; Stacey Royal, 3135 Jamestown Rd; Cody Farley, Long Lake,
assistant fire chief; Kelly Grady,Long Lake; and Brad Erickson, Corcoran provided comments.
