HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-07-2024 Park Commission MinutesMinutes Orono Parlc Commission Regular Meeting Orono City Council Chambers May 7, 2024 Deputy Chair Porter called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL The Orono Park Commission members present: Deputy Chair Cameron Porter, Commissioners Janice Berg, Rick Carter, Michael Huddy and alternate Sandy Rasmussen. Members not present: Gordy Stofer, Kjersti Duval and Chair Brian Roath. Staff present: Park Director Josh Lemons APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. February 6, 2024 Park Cormmission meeting minutes Carter moved, Berg seconded, to approve the minutes of the February 6, 2024 Park Commission meeting as submitted. VOTE: Ayes 5, Nays 0. PUBLIC COMMENT Janie Delaney, 1315 Woodhill Ave; Denny Walsh, 1354 Rest Point Circle, Roger Adams, 1130 Underhill Circle, Long Lake, and Ritchie Anderson, 3205 Crystal Bay Rd. offered comments. PRESENTATION STAFF REPORT 2. Golf Course Update Staff reported the golf course was able to open a month earlier than last year and although it has been wet, many rounds have already been played. The 100Anniversary of the golf course will be celebrated with events June 17 to 22 with the main events Saturday June 22. Last year there was one Junior League and this year there are two. The turf on the course came out well over the winter despite a lack of snow cover. The department bought some gently used greens mowers from a course in Des Moines. Lemons said the department has a great staff this year that is working hard and trying to support the community. 3. Park Updates Lemons reported on staffing status and the transition to spring activities. The goal is to have all the parks functional with docks, swim platforms and biffs out by Memorial Day. One of the larger projects this year will be the Hackberry Park restoration. The area where the house was demolished will be seeded this spring. The park is currently under water so drainage will have to be watched this year. Big Island is open for the season. The restrooms are functioning as they should and are cleaned on a regular basis. Some tree trinuning is planned. The Bederwood ballfield will be marked soon. CHAIR REPORT COMMISSIONER REPORTS Commissioners Carter, Rasmussen, Huddy and Porter had reports. ADJOURNMENT Carter moved, Berg seconded, to adjourn the meeting at 6:56 p.m. to August 6, 2024.
