AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 78 OF THE ORONO CITY CODE
CONCERNING ACCESSORY BUILDINGS
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ORONO, MINNESOTA ORDAINS:
SECTION l. Section 78-1 of the Orono City Code is amended to read:
Lot line, rear, means that boundary of a lot which is opposite the front lot line. If the rear
lot line is less than ten feet in length, or if the lot forms a point at the rear, the rear lot line shall
be a line ten feet in length within the lot, parallel to and at the maximum distance from the front
lot line. On a lakeshore lot, the rear lot line is the lot line that is opposite the natural ordinary
hi�h water mark at the lakeshore.
SECTION 2. Section 78-1435 (Accessory Buildings—Location) of the Orono City
Code is amended to read:
Except as ma�e specifically�rovided,�no detached garage or other accessory building shall
be located nearer to the front or street lot line than the principal building on that lot_e�se�
Detached g�ages or other accessory buildings on lots which have frontage on a lake��
ma ��be located��between the c��rear
yards of such lots and the principal building�ee�s-t�e onlv if setback requirements of
section 78-305(b), section 78-330(b) and section 78-350(b) are met.;e� _etached
garages on lots that have frontage on a lake may be located ten feet from the street or rear lot line
when doors face away from the street and an adequate vehicle turnaround is provided on the site.
This section shall not apply to lakeshore lots that are divided by streets or private roads�s or
are corner lots.

SECTION 3. Section 78-1440 is added to the Orono City Code to read:
Sec. 78-1440. Exterior Materials.
Except for accessory buildings that are less than 120 square feet in area or are located on
lots two acres in area or lar�er, an accessorv building and the principal building shall be
consistent in desi�n and color. Detached garages located within the rear vard on lots that have
frontage on a lake shall have windows or other omamental features on the wall facing a street or
private road.
SECTION 4. This Ordinance shall be effective upon approval and publication.
Adopted by the City Council of the City of Orono on this 24 thday of November ,
2008,by a vote of 5 ayes and�nays.
