ORDINANCE NO 6 , THIRD SERIES
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE CITY OF ORONO ZONING CODE
SECTION 78-1466 AND SECTION 78-1468
REGARDING SIGNS
The City Council of Orono ordains as follows:
Section 1: Municipal Zoning Code Section 78-1466 is hereby revised as follows:
(10) Pvlon SiQn. A si�ri s_upported b�post or posts so that the sign and
supports are finished to agr de bv encasing the posts in a material consistent
with the si�n and where the base width dimension is a minimum of 10%up to
and includin� 50%of the �reatest width of the si ri.
(11) Monument Signs. One monument si�n, limited to two (2) faces is allowed
per frontage per property,with a maximum of two (2). The areas of si n�base,
the supportin background structure, and the sign copv shall be combined for
determining the total square footage and the height of the monument siQn.
a. The total allowable square foota�e shall not exceed 100 square feet
per side. The base and supporting material shall constitute at least
25 percent of the total square footage.
b. The base width dimension is 50%or more of the greatest width of
the si�n
c. The si n�co y area shall have a minimum clearance of 20 inches
above ground level.
d. The si�n c�o y area shall be completelv enclosed within the
monument materials.
e. No nortion of the sign or sign structure shall exceed 10 feet above
�round level.
f. The monument si�n base shall be constructed of materials similar
in appearance to those of the principal structure and shall consist of
brick, natural stone, stucco, textured cast stone, or integrally
colored concrete masonrv units. The structure surrounding the
face of the sign from the base to the top of the sign must be solid,
continuous, and consist of the base materials or complementary
materials that match the appearance and color of the principal
buildin�.
g. The 200 square feet of�round area around the base of the
monument sign shall be landscaped with shrubs or perennials.

Section 2: Municipal Zoning Code Section 78-1468 is hereby revised as follows:
Sec. 78-1468. Signs in B and I districts.
Within the B and I districts, •��-��„'^+� ��^�,wall and monument signs-a�
� ' are permitted subject to the following regulations:
Section 3: This Ordinance shall be published in THE PIONEER and THE LAKER
newspapers and slZall become effective upon approval and publication.
Adopted by the City Council of Orono on this 26`h day of April, 2004 by a vote of
�ayes and�_nays.
