On September 22, 1983, I inspected the existing septic system at the
house your firm is remodeling at 1461 Bay Ridge Road in Orono. By
probing with a steel rod, I was able to exactly locate' the existing
drainfield lines and did rope them off. The drainfield lines are
located in the area which you had proposed for the circle driveway.
Because of this, the circle driveway must be eliminated to maintain
a 20' required setback between drainfield lines and "hardcover".
I will note for the record that the system consists of two block
construction septic tanks of approximately 600 or 750 Cj:.llons each
(original permit records ar& unclear) and 250-300 square feet of
drainfield. This is somewhat undersized based on standards for a
new home (the typical system installed today consists of .2-1,000
gallon precast concrete tanks and probably 600-800 square feet of
drainfield for a four bedroom house in the sandier soil found at
the Bay Ridge lot).
While you are not required to bring the system up to current standards,
I would suggest you consider adding some drainfield, and as a minimvun,
at least uncover the tanks and distribution box and repair/replace
baffles as necessary.
