From: Steve Weckman, On-Site Systems Ma.nager
Date: July 22, 1992
Subject: Septic System Repair
On July 21, 1992, Sullivan's Services, Inc. requested a
permit for the repair of the septic system at this address. The
site inspection revealed that the first trench was discharging to
the surface while the remaining trenches appeared to be dry. The
first drop box was uncovered and found to be in satisfactory
condition. Using a transit, the top of the PVC pipe for the
first trench was measured to be 7" higher than the ground
elevation at the end of the trench 60' away. The depth to
drainfield rock at the end of the trench is approximately 12"
which indicates that the rock bed must slope downward at least
18° over the 60' length.
In order to repair the septic system, septic effluent must
be forced into the second trench when the first trench becomes
filled rather than allowing it to surface. The repair was made
by cutting off the drainfield 30' from the drop box where the
soil surface is approximately 9" higher than the elevation of the
drainfield pipe in the drop box. This repair will still allow
full usage of the first 30' of this trench while assuring that
the ef f luent wi 11 f low into the second drop box once the f irst
drainfield line is filled.
The site inspection for this repair revealed that the cause
of the septic system failure is due to the improper installation
of the system. During the installation of the septic system, the
contractor uses some leveling device to assure that the trenches
will remain level. In this case the trench slopes downward to
such a great degree that the contractor, Quickway Excavation,
must have known the trench was not level but continued adding
trench in order to achieve the correct amount of square footage
required for the residence.
