Subject: Procedure for scheduling inspections and when inspections should be made.
All inspections will be made within 24 hours,upon notification by telephone or in person(612-249-
4600).
•
The required inspections are in order as follows:
1. Footing Inspection-to be made after the forms are in place and prior to the pouring of any
concrete. All survey stakes must be marked.
2. Plumbing Inspection - after all plumbing is roughed in, 5# air test is required.
3. Septic System - see septic system installers' handout.
4. Sewer/Water Connections -to be made prior to covering any portion of connection.
5. Mechanical Inspection - after heating is roughed in.
6. Electrical Inspection-after all electrical is roughed in. Inspection and permits done by State
Electrical Inspector, Michael Hawk, 612-598-1711 (office hours 7:00-8:30 a.m.).
7. Framing Inspection-to be made after inspection no.2,6,and 7 are complete,but prior to the
placement of any covering material.
8. Insulation Inspection-to be made after the roof covering is completed, insulation and vapor
barrier are in place, but prior to the placement of any covering material.
9. Lath and/or Wallboard Inspection - to be made after lathing and/or wallboard, interior and
exterior, is in place, but before any plastering is applied or before wallboard joints and
fasteners are taped and finished.
10. Final Inspection- to be made after the building is complete and prior to occupancy.

310.9.1 Smoke detectors.
310.9.1.1 General.Dwelling uni.ts,•congregate residences and hotel or lodging house guest
rooms'that are used for sleeping purposes shall be provided with smoke.detectors. Detectors shall
installed in accordance with the approved manufacturer's instructions.

310.9.1.2 Additions, alterations or repairs to Group R Occupancies.When the valuation of an
addition,alteration or repair to a Group P.Occupancy exceeds $1,000 and a permit is required, or
when oneor more sleeping rooms are added•or created in existing Group R Occupancies, smoke
detectorsshallbe installed in accordance with Sections 310.9.1.3, 310.9.1.4 and 310.9.1.5 of this
section.
EXCEPTION:Repairs to the exterior surfaces of a Group R'Occupancy are exempt from the rt
ments of this section.

310.9.1.3 Power source. In new construction, required smoke detectors shall receive their pri-
mary power from the building wiring when such wiring is served from a commercial source and
shall be equipped with a battery backup. The detector shall emit a signal when the batteries are

current protection. Smoke detectors may be solely battery operated when installed in existing
buildings; or in buildings without commercial power; or in buildings which undergo alterations,
repairs or additions regulated by Section 310.9.1.2.

310.9.1.4 Location within dwelling units. In dwelling units, a detector shall be installed in ea
sleeping room and at a point centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to each sepa-
sleeping area.When the dwelling unit has more than one story and in dwellings basement_
detector shall be installed on each story and in the basement. In dwelling units where a story o-
rient is split into two or more levels, the smoke detector shall be installed on the upper level, e_
that when the lower level contains a sleeping area, a detector shall be installedFon each level.V
sleeping rooms are on an upper level, the detector shall be placed at the ceiling of the upper le'
close proximity to the stairway. In dwelling units where the ceiling height of a room open to th
hallway serving the bedrooms exceeds that of the hallway by 24 inches (610 min) or more, smo
detectors shall be installed in the hallway and in the adjacent room. Detectors shall sound an :
audible in all sleeping areas of the dwelling unit in which they are located.
