I have reviewed the letter and exhibits submitted by Mark
Gronberg regarding the proposed sewer connection for the Woodhill
Country Club, and also the soils map of the area.
I would concur with Gronberg that developing suitable on-
site sewage treatment systems for the Country Club would be
difficult if not impossible. He is correct in his statements
regarding the dangers of "groundwater mounding", and certainly
the soils map verifies that steep slopes and low wet areas are
predominant on the property. Development of as many as 10
different individual mound sites would at best leave them
scattered throughout the property in locations poorly accessible
for maintenance. Further, the task of creating a system to dose
the mounds equally from a single source, would be complex and
expensive. Finally, there are potential conflicts with the
necessary maintenance and golf cart/pedestrian traffic
characteristics of a golf course which could pose problems for
mounds located on the golf course.
If the Country Club septic systems are currently failing
(which one must presume from their efforts to find a suitable
alternative), any discharge probably ends up in wetlands which
feed Lake Minnetonka. It would therefore seem imperative that
Orono assist to the greatest degree possible in solving this
problem for the benefit of the general public, regardless which
city or cities are involved.
