Dear Mr. &Mrs. Storch:
A routine inspection of your septic system was conducted on April 12, 2000. At the time of inspection
it was found that the septic system is discharging untreated septic effluent to the surface. This is a
violation of the Orono septic code. The system was last inspected on July 10, 1998 at which time it was
found to be discharging effluent to the surface. A soil boring was taken and logged that showed the
system does not meet the state required three foot separation between the seasonally high water table
and the bottom of the trench system.
City code requires that all systems discharging untreated effluent to the surface be repaired or replaced
within ninety (90) days. A system that lacks the three separation requirement must be replaced within
ten(10)years.
It is my opinion that the reason the system is surfacing is possibly due to excess water being used. I
recommend that you check all water fixtures in the home to make sure that they are not leaking. I also
recommend that water use be conserved as much as possible. The water softener recharge water and
draintile sump pump should not go into the septic system. These water sources do not need to be treated
and can be pumped outside the home.
I will reinspect the property in one month. If at that time the septic system is still discharging to the
surface, the septic system will need to be replaced in ninety (90) days. If the system is not discharging
to the surface, the septic system will need to be replaced by December 31, 2008.
If there are any questions regarding this letter, please contact me at the City Offices at (952) 249-4600.
If you would prefer, I would be happy to meet with you on the property to discuss your options.
Respectfully,
Chris Pence

Dear Mr.&Mrs. Storch:
An inspection of your septic system was conducted on July 6, 2000. A summary of the inspection is
below.
Septic Tank Condition
1. Pumpout not needed at this time.
The septic system is non-compliant due to a lack of a three foot separation distance between the bottom
of the drainfield to the seasonally high watertable. The three foot requirement is a State Code, not a City
Code. A soil boring was conducted to determine the depth of the seasonally watertable. The septic
system must be replaced by December 31,2010.
Enclosed is a list of state licensed septic contractors who work in Orono on a regular basis. Also
enclosed is a fact sheet explaining how a septic system functions properly. Finally, an as-built drawing
is enclosed that shows the approximate location of the septic system.
• If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact me at the City Offices at 249-4600.
